will there be something similar to "enemy detected" notifications? i.e when a enemy unit comes into radar range you get a ping or alert. Doesnt have to be a sound, could be a message on screen.... or perhaps a better idea is a defcon rating or similar in corner? :)

i.e. green when nothing on radar, yellow when something is detected on radar, and red when something is under attack.

Gives you a quick visual on the status of enemies without the need to zoom out and in (if you dont use mini map) when working on your base etc?

you'd be getting hundreds of notifications every second with this feature as new units were produced or appeared on your radar?

hmm, i wouldnt want to see it as intrusive as that. Maybe just the alert "defcon" type light / status in the corner. It wouldnt change for every unit, just a check to see if enemies are in radar range or attacking your structures.

    green (radar show no enemies)
yellow (one or more enemies in radar range)
red (one or more enemies attacking your units) -- or buildings only??

you might end up playing mainly in yellow / red status, but could be handy esp during early game play or when you are the only one on the planet (heads up when someone eventually comes into radar)

on screen messages or sounds might get annoying i agree.

A sound, definitely. But it has to be super simple and subtle.

Nothing more than a single click per new unit sighted. Might be fun having a Ginger Counter go wild for a few seconds as the enemy comes into view.

Would love to hear a little 'ping' as a new contact was detected. Wasn't there a scene in Aliens where they had a device like that, and it went:

    ping..................ping.............ping.......ping....ping..ping.pingpingpingpingpipipipipip

    would be cool....

Maybe could be toggled per radar to stop it getting too annoying. Could def. be useful early game tho

Only getting a ping the first time you encounter someone would be tolerable. So if you were playing against 5 other people you'd only ever have to hear 5 pings.

I can picture Howard cringing at this idea.

i dont think i've ever asked about the music post a decent match ;)

perhaps you would also enjoy tanks with silencers? since they may also ruin the ambiance.

Once the fighting begins I would expect weapons to be the ambience.

I would be in favour of notifications being moddable, as a widget, addon or something so everyone could make their own notification system and use it in whatever game they play in.
In SpringRTS games you can have custom widgets that place down markers with labels like "Anti-nuke" on antinukes once you detect them for example.
Getting a Ping when units enters Radar range, line of sight or whatever could be advantegous and/or annoying.
If you don't wanna get spammed by say... patroling enemy fighters going in and out of your radar range... Then you would need a little more complex notification system than a ping for every unit that enters radar range.

I typically listen to gunfire and explosions alot. That way I can both know what kind of units that are fighting and in what direction of they are fighting in.
I would be interested to see notifications played from in the game world so that you can determine where the enemy enters radar range. That applies for 2D maps atleast... I don't know how much it would improve situational awereness in a planetary map.
