Hi all if there was ever an award for the best game concept i think Planetary Annihilation would win hands down. The idea is very original and very exciting. If i understand the game idea it may be like S/C Forged Alliance but over many planets all in real time. So a simple example could be 4vs4 played with a setup of 16 planets/Moons after 1hr of game play there could be 10 Planets/M discoverd and 6 Planets/M undiscoverd with each player now in control of 2/3 bases each on diffrent Planets/Moons and each player in control of say 2,000 units so far. with every player zooming in and out to each planet at will. So at any given time i can see all my units and 3 other team players with all there buildings and units all at will. Then the battles and chaos begins. Thousands of units get ordered to move Thousands of missiles fired buildings being built Ai movement/tracking, physics, hit calculations and so on. Is the PC powerfull enough yet for this scope of a game/idea.?
If i understood you right then i would say YES. UBER said that the pc´s dont have to be beast´s.But for an bigger battle like the Galactic War you need an very good pc to play with 40 other player´s at the moment.
Pretty much this.. Maybe the amount of moons/planets doesnt affect performance that much.. Think in something like an MMO game like WoW, the size of the world do not affect performance since the processing power is spent only in the area being shown. I don't know if this apply here...
If they do the codeing right, I dont think you need a powerfull PC to play a game with 10 people. Now, dont quote me on this, cause I dont know much about codeing, but, it seams to me that the major slowdown point in the PC will be grapichs procsessing, and phyiscs, unit orders and such seem to be minor points. Meaby pathfinding would slow it down two? I think I remeber one of the reasons SupCom/FA games slowed to a crawl after a few hours was pathfinding to dead units.
More players = more physics, units, pathfinding, unit orders, etc... I do think you'll need a powerful server machine to run a 10 player game. 4-6 players will probably be doable for the average PC though. The main reason SupCom/FA slowed down was the AI. Sorian's mod made it slightly better, but not enough.
Just remember that the server doesn't actually have to render anything* *unless its something like a lan party and there is also a client running on the machine.
