That was the first game I bought on GOG, and is still my favorite RTS to this day.

    Prepare for glory

I'll probably get shot down for saying this; but I had every intention of buying this game to play it again. Just for the 2nd expansion pack. But I just can't get past the graphics. I have such fond memories of the game and then I look at the gameplay pictures and am reminded...

...Makes you wonder how you ever played it. And yet it was cutting edge at the time.

Okay, call me slow but I never really knew what GoG had. I always blew it off as a useless service selling me games I would prefer to own on physical media instead. Never realized they had so much abandonware. I don't know whether to thank you, or curse you for successfully getting marketing hooks into me. :p

The GOG version is by far the superior version of all the out-of-box versions you can find. They were the first to get the soundtrack playing flawlessly, and the game has all the patches and units applied.

That said, be sure to check out TA Universe for suggestions on setting up some of the tweaks, like the Demo Recorder, which, in addition to recording replays, fixes some DirectDraw settings and adds some gameplay features like placing buildings in rows and boxes.

Also, be aware if you are coming from a Starcraft environment, the game controls for TA will feel VERY clunky and unintuitive at first. (Most notably the way you left click to give orders and right click to select, which is a reversal of what most modern RTSs follow. However, some old school TA players insist that this is the superior method. You can probably find their posts on these forums.) However, once you start to see the versatility and variety of the units, you'll find that even though it's quite old, the game still holds up.

That said, while the graphics are a bit harsh in comparison to new games, they're still clean and have good contrast, which is why you see a lot of old TAers on the forums arguing it was easier to manage than Supcom was. (And I'm sure their preference towards fixed zoom is a part of that.) The important thing is that they don't get in the way of the gameplay, which is where the game shines.

(After all, the original Super Mario Bros looks terrible by today's standards, but it's easy to ignore once you get back into the game.)

And because TA is so awesome, if you really want to change it, go to options -> interface and you can switch between the default left click interface and a right click one.

Does the dynamic music work in the GOG version?
I have the impulse/Gamestop version and it only plays one track and then the music stops.
Does not matter if i use random track option etc.
It always only play one track and thats it.
It should change music on the situation (battle, buildup, etc)

ghodan7, it's not perfect, but it's the superior version from a functional standpoint. The most notable feature is that the music plays the way it should, which nearly every single other version out there, INCLUDING the original CD release, has issues doing. (The original release requires you to use drive D to play the CD if you want to hear the music. If I recall correctly, the no-cd patch on TAU meant you have no music either.)
The unit cap is set to the TA default, and upping it to 500 is a very quick tweak. (You create a 2 line text file.)
The units and maps are missing, I think there was a legal issue for that, but they're all on TAU and take a moment to install, so no loss there.

For some reason, the music does not change with the battle. It only changes if I go out of the application while it's running and then go back on again.

Also, those peewees are the bane of my existence.
