Will this be possible within the engine?, or is it too complicated or just an unwanted idea for this game?

It's not within the scope of the game, Uber has said that the UI for something like space combat would be too different, whether or not it will be capable via modding is just extremely unknown, but if I had to guess I'd say most likely no, the Dev time for that might be too much to pull away from the actual game.

There will be no space combats I think. And I'm glad about this, because it would change the gameplay totally.

I knew it wasn't on the cards, was more curious about the limitations of the engine and so on. Thanks for the reply anyhoo's, really looking forward to to the game and it's evolution.

Well... who knows, right? Maybe it will be possible to create a mod like this. I don't know who could answer this question, because nobody knows about the engine.

From what I have heard/read, they are doing full mechanics on large bodies and you can add engines to them, and you have interplanetary artillery and such. So my uneducated guess is that this could be modded in because all the parts are already there. The hard part will be doing a UI well I think, only because controlling 100's of units in orbits is gonna be time consuming. So it could come down to how much control the player has, how automated you make them and so on. Also if the orbital sim is more intense than unit sim, then it could hurt unit caps maybe.

Modding in homeworld like space combat will probably be hard to mod in, unless the engine is really open. Maybe some work-arounds can be utilized.

I still hope there can be significant space battles in the orbital layer. But if that is not the case, modding that in should be relatively easy.

There should be modding support for this though.

This sounds as if you want them to make deep (so non-orbital) space combat possible, only for it to be used for modding. They're not making it because it's a lot of work and probably would not suit the gameplay of this particular game. (The suiting is their words, not mine, although I agree)

Well the Devs have always said the game is going to be modder friendly, and with alot of people asking and crying out for it i dont think it would beyond a modders capabilities somewhere down the line after release to see a mod that adds Spaceships and Space Combat.

We will just have to wait and see

It would be such a great feature for modding, cause none of the rts engines supports both ground battles and space battles before, if PA have this, it might ultimately get a mod as successful as DOTA or Counter-Strike.

Well yeah, that's because it's a lot of work! Despite Pa having an Oribital Layer, moons, asteroids and KEWs, it actually will likely gloss over all that deep space bit. It's not like you'll have to steer KEWs, build the engines and give a target, the game handles the rest.

In order to even just open up modding to deepspace combat/control would be far too much work and far to divergent form the game's scope.

MAYBE once PA is out, and a huge success and bring in all kinds of cash, they can look at the problem again and re-evaluate it, but right now they got enough on their plate.
