Is there any chance that you guys will be working on a real-time strategy game some time in the near future? With the release of Supreme Commander 2 being a huge disappointment to a lot of TA and SCFA fans, I think it's time another company have a stab at realizing the vision behind Total Annihilation. Is it at all possible right now?
Hold on there. They're still making MNC and they are a small team. Besides, most SCFA players actually like SupCom2 as much or more than its predecessor.
Erm, I see the statistics on the forum and I can tell you that's not the case. SupCom2 turned a lot of the old fans away, especially the top players. The numbers of posts have been cut in half and there are fewer users posting. We went from a buzzing multiplayer scene with regular live cast tourneys to 2 active German 'pro' players and a bunch of newbies in just a couple of month. I remember days when I went to refill my coffee cup and there were maybe 20 new posts when I came back 5 minutes later. The last time that happened was before the demo was released. Since that day it has been extremely quiet, too quiet for a game that was just released.
I'd say Col_Jessep is right. Every hardcore fan I know is furious with the new changes, and you can find dissent all over the GPG, Square Enix and Gamereplays forums, along with several negative reviews in Metacritic in which the same themes appear. The game has been dumbed down to a simple RTS about micromanagement and tedious tasks that should be automated. A lot of the concessions were made to get the game running on a the 5-year-old XBox 360, a platform that will never be suitable to play an RTS on. The void between console and PC is so much wider for RTS than it is for FPS. Anyway, since Jon Mavor, John Comes ("Scathis"), and several other ex-GPG employees are at Uber, I was wondering they'd be willing to carry the torch at some point in the future. The Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander series had so much potential that no other RTS has even tried to copy. It would be a shame if it had to end this way.
Maybe you guys just aren't up to current events then. Most of the... cries and whines (let's face it. Those weren't even arguments) only existed because SupCom2 wasn't just FA but bigger.
Me, personally, I'm tired of working on RTS games. That's all I did for almost 7 years of my career. (C&C: Generals Zero Hour, LotR:BFME, C&C3, SupCom, Demigod) It's not to say we might do something down the road but at this point, we're all about Monday Night Combat.
Scathis, if you do a strategy game, why not something funny like Dungeon Keeper? Haha, that's a good one. I might not be as well informed about the game as some of the fans but I know what's going on in the German community and on the forum. It's not a pretty picture... I have played the campaign and SupCom2 is an okay game and fun but it can't touch SupCom or FA. And it doesn't really matter why customers think the game is inferior as long as they think it is inferior an don't buy it. Prices are dropping on Amazon (-20% in 10 days), it has the worst rating of all strategy games that will be released in this quarter (2/5) and I think it will probably go downhill from here. A shame really.
I can confirm that we are not working on any RTS games at the moment and it's unlikely it will happen anytime soon. That being said it's still a genre I'm personally interested in and I would love to take another shot at doing an RTS someday. When people corner me on this I start spitting out some of my ideas but most of them are so raw that I wouldn't never post them in a forum until they were more thought out.
I don't mean to be the thread necromancer, but I just saw your guys' Kickstarter video, and I'm really impressed. It's 4am here, and I'm quite drunk, but I am honestly so proud of all of you. John "Scathis" Comes, I'm so glad you came around and aren't "sick" of making RTS games anymore. Go ahead and ignore realism, and just go for awesome. I'm 30 years old now, but I played Total Annihilation when I was just a kid in 1997. It completely blew my mind away, as did Supreme Commander, but I always had much more hope for the whole series. I haven't even played any games PC or console, for the last two years, because I've been waiting for something better... I really, truly believe that you guys can carry the torch for us, and take the RTS to the next level that it has deserved for all of these years. I sincerely hope that you will take your time to do this game justice, and to show the world how good this genre really can be. We have all been waiting, and all will continue to wait, for you to deliver the ideal version of what we have all envisioned together as the single best RTS ever conceived of in computer game history. Lofty goals, I know, but if it was anyone else, I wouldn't be saying this. To be honest, this game is one of the few things I have lived for, and I know you guys can do it. You made Total Annihilation, you made Supreme Commander. With one more chance, what's stopping you from making the best RTS ever? You know the answer. Good luck, - Coldboot
P.S. I just put my money where my mouth is and pledged $250. If anyone else feels this passionately about the real successor to the game we all love, hopefully you can do the same. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/659 ... ?ref=users
Question that's been on my mind since the PA announcement: IS Scathis working on it at all? There's a fun quote along similar lines in the MNC wiki.
I believe he will be overseeing the project but will still tend to SMNC. Though that's second hand information, it'd be better getting word from the big S-Man himself.
I'll be advising the design but it's very much Neutrino's game. I'm still focused on the MNC franchise and SMNC right now.
I have made one strategy for playing games. Every Day evening time I mostly 2 hours on play the game with my brother. The game is "Taken Five" It's a too good fighting. Every day that is happening regularly because I have fond of play game. :geek:
Plus if I my memory recalls correctly on your quotations: "After balancing over 300 units Scathis has sworn not to develop another RTS anytime soon".
