So it looks like: Big rock+planet=lava planet.
    Cool.

but does it cool off so it can be colonized again?
does it stay as a glowing monument to your power?
Does the blast take out the whole damn planet, or was that 'cos it was a small planet?
Can you smack asteroids into other asteroids?
Would a small planet or moon break up into asteroids?

    Answers? Opinions?

These are all good questions, along with will the relative size of the planet and the asteroid hitting it factor in to the damage range?

    You forgot two important questions:

One: **** asteroids, can I smash PLANETS into other planets? I just build a bunch of thrusters on the north face of a planet and let 'er rip.

Two: Can I smash STARS into other STARS?!?1shiftone

I believe something to that effect was mentioned in the PC Gamer interview, though I could just be reading too much into it.

That's going to be more difficult, considering that stars don't have solid surfaces and anything that can tolerate contact with a star will be indestructible in the course of normal planet-killing warfare. You're probably just going to have to be content with fusion bombs.

What about a Shkadov thruster or something like a Dyson sphere?

I would say yes because on kickstarter i asked uber this "Briar Pol Thursday Aug 16, 1:20am EDT
I am wondering if you can crash an asteroid to a planet.. Can you use the same "Engine" scheme could you crash an enemy planet into let's say a lone star?

    yes"

So I would say you can crash a planet into a planet.

I was thinking about a Dyson ring (Ringworld) but a Dyson sphere would be much more interesting, and make a hell of a megastructure but some what detracting from the metal planet.

More importantly: can I then harvest the rich metal core of that planet to continue my rampage to the rest of the system?

Guys, we might be getting a bit far afield here.
I'm pretty sure that space empires 4 has that option, that might be a bit much for this game though.
I'm just wondering what happens to the planet after we smash a rock into it is all.
