I backed $165, and I'm wondering how much depth there will be to planetary naming. I am hoping for some sort of in-game wiki with these planet names, and some form of small passage written by the person that named it. I mean, c'mon I think we all want to say to our friends "Hey, this planet in the game is named after me", even if it isn't directly named after your username.

I think just being able to add a name to the pool would be a little boring and not very special, as any mods could name their own planets and the such anyways, but also the chances that your specific planet standing out or being a special type would be pretty small. Like, most of us would rather have some interesting planet named after us instead of a petty asteroid!

My understanding is that there will be a procedural name generator as a component of the procedural map generator, which is to say that each time a map is generated the stellar bodies within it will be named as part of the map creating process. The random name generator might just pick a name from a predetermined list, or might include an algorithm that creates names from the seed material (the backers names, plus anything else the devs want included in names) on the fly.

If the latter, the number of possible names might be far too many to list on a wiki page.

The names are the seed for the system that generates names. So it's not one planet, it's random and the planets get created on an ongoing basis.

Ok. Got another question, though; when we give our names, will they be added to the planet "as is", or with a prefix/suffix? So, if I entered my named as "Causeless", would the planets named after it be called just "Causeless" alone or something more interesting like "Causeless Prime" and so on?

Also, I have a request, and I'm not sure if it's even possible due to the procedural nature of this game, but would it be possible for us to set a preferred (but not a 100% chance) planet archetype for planets we name? Or, if possible, even create a specific preferred planet we could create by hand when the game is released? It's probably a lot to ask for, but I know I'd love it, whether it's us being able to fully create a planet by hand or just set a preferred archetype.

Shouldn't the name be applied to the star system, and then planets follow standard nomenclature? i.e. (Star Name) I, (Star Name) II, (Star Name) III, (Star Name) IV etc. I suppose they could also be given a nickname in addition to this designation. Moons might also be named independently of the body they orbit. But when there is a galactic war, remembering which planet is in which system is going to be a pain if they aren't regularly named.
