When talking about experimentals, uber_neutrino said why this game is coming out early, and how it will be different from previous releases:
It only works because what we're dealing here is not your usual game producer. These are a bunch of guys who want to design an awesome game, and need money for that (plus, of course, they'd like to gain some money out of this game). As opposed to 'meh, do whatever you want, as long as I get my money'. These guys actually listen to the community, instead of making a few vague promises and largely ignoring the community, except for a few patches half-heartedly based on what people are saying. This probably is a bit too black-white, and it's only my opinion anyway, but it's what I think. So yes, I could see this working. I could see this being a great idea.
Really the worst case scenario is we take longer to make the game perfect. But I would prefer to crunch hard and get it out as opposed to pissing around for a year then crunching hard after that
Frankly, I think that's a bit harsh, there are many, many Game Devs out there that just want to make great games, but the fact is games cost money, a lot of it in fact and until recently aside from self funding(fairly rare) the other main way was publishers, but when a publisher funds a game this tends to come with all kinds of red tape and attached strings, I'm sure you've all heard at least one horror story of publisher interference, well, I'd say those are a lot more common than we fear. But with crowdfunding now slowly becoming more and more viable we'll start to see a big shift in game making, as a consumer I think Crowdfunding stands to be one of the most positive changes to the industry in a long time. Mike
Major props to Neutrino for paying as much attention as he has. It's more than most developers do and when most suggestions make me cringe at their lack of importance I wouldn't blame them for ignoring the community and just getting on with what they do. Too many cooks spoil the broth and the people making the game probably have a better idea of what it needs than us who don't really know as much about it. If there's people who were involved in TA involved in making this then I'm cool with whatever they do. I just hope they get enough money to do everything they want to do.
Mhm, you're probably right. I have a way of not exactly saying what I mean to say - but I'm not a native English speaker, so maybe it's that. But yeah, 'the fans' win regardless.
Frankly i'm looking forward to what you guys can do without a publisher gnawing at your ankles and slapping your hands away from the keyboard, like back in the days of TA where you pretty much did what you liked and came out with the most defining RTS in my experience! Except this time with more money =P I imagine that beta will be happening way before it normally would in a project like this? Since you're going to be adding things as you go and not focusing on any silly campaign stuff, at what point do you envision getting the beta testers in on the development cycle?
So enabling player made content is part of the plan. Cool. I have made a few maps and badges before and will have a go at whatever is available. Maybe this will be the game where I graduate to 3D, who knows? As for schedules, well the stretch-goal-chickens are still hatching. I like the idea of floaty wars on gas giants, also really like the idea of submarine wars too ... poissonerly... !
