I just purchased a new capture card, and I know at least a handful of the forum users here have one as well.

Edit: Check the Video section for a SD capture test featuring two funny assassin fails. I'll be upgrading to HD on Sunday.

We should really try to get a decent youtube community going for this game, since 90% of the MNC videos on youtube are pretty "meh" and half of the good ones come from Uber themselves. Maybe if we make decent enough videos the devs can post/embed them on the MNC webpage. It would certainly help with word of mouth marketing for this game.

Team OxyTeam will be working on funtages (IN HD) soon enough, but there is also a distinct lack of GOOD gameplay/commentaries out there.

All of you competitive gamers could also take this opportunity to show us pub stompers full length matches.

Next week I was going to start on my Tank Guide with video. If my setup wasn't such a pain in the behind I would make videos more often. I hope this one doesn't take me too long to record, edit and then write out. lol

A few days ago I wasn't thinking about how to make a MNC machinima but it's seem a bit harder then I thought.

Usually I just live stream and upload a highlight to youtube if I have a good enough game. I'd love to do commentary if I knew how.

Shammas do you have a mic? Besides the hardware it's very easy.

I can record in mere 480p, but I haven't had much use for recording anything for months :(

That, and I *HATE* editing and uploading footage. None of the live streaming sites I've tried(justin.tv/Livestream/Ustream) are compatible with my capture card so getting things to YouTube's fifteen minute limits ends up taking me 3x the amount of time I spent recording something to get it ready and uploaded :(

Also, I've got to ask Hudson: do you really think recording in HD would be worth the trouble? I can't stand uploading 480p as it is, I can't imagine waiting on HD-quality video to upload or how quickly my teensy 160 gig hard drive would be taken up if I didn't rapid delete footage after uploading it.

Ill be recording 2 hour sessions and will be purchasing an external in the future.

I'll have nightly deletes I'm sure, which is fine.

Edit: I just posted a SD demo of a full game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_fi_P2NL8E

    Read the description. :)

I'd love to be able to record some footage, I really want to make some funtages. Unfortunately, my tech knowledge doesn't extend to this sort of thing, can anyone give me a tutorial of sorts on how to get recording set up?

    Reminds me of Futurama.

Fry: Maybe I'll just move into a cardboard box
Bender: No way! Have you seen the rent on those things? Its atrocious!

How easy it is will depend on your TV and your video card. If your TV has a PC output(which isn't common to the best of my knowledge) and your video card can receive input directly from a USB port, pretty much all you'll need is a cable that has the proper matching ends to make the connection to them and possibly software or drivers to get it working. The only PC recording software I know of is Fraps though, which only records 30 seconds at a time unless you pay for it.

If the above situation doesn't match yours, things are going to be more complicated! There's a wide range of capture cards available, the important thing is to get one that meets your budget and wishes. What in my opinion you should look for in a capture card:

-comes with recording software(editing software isn't necessary: Microsoft and Apple both have their own free video editing software)

-can record in 480p(any lower quality and things look fugly)
-has an S-video input(boosts video quality without going all the way to HD)

-optional: has a converter/splitter box(one that has this and accepts HDMI input with multiple output options is pretty much the golden standard but you'll pay out the *** for such features), 5.1/7.1 surround sound

Now, when it comes to hooking it all up you should probably just follow instructions, but depending on whether or not yours has a converter/splitter box you may need more(thankfully cheap!) equipment.

-component A/V cables(you'll probably need these even if you have a high-end device with a converter/splitter box just for connecting things)

-splitters and couplers if your capture card lacks a converter/splitter box

All right. So now that you've got all your fancy-shmancy equipment, it's time to set everything up.

TV output to USB input: Plug in the proper cable, fire up your software, and you're ready to go.

TV output to device: Plug in the proper cable, plug the device into your computer, fire up the recording software, and you're ready to go.

capture card with a converter/splitter box: Pull the plugs normally connecting your console to your TV and plug them into the converter/splitter box. Plug in the needed cables to it's output to ensure both your TV and computer get a signal from it. Fire up the software and go.

splitters and couplers: Pull the plugs normally connecting your console to your TV and plug them into your splitters, plug your splitters into your couplers, and plug your A/V cables into your TV and your capture card. Fire up that software.

An additional note on A/V cables...You *CAN* use them for HD input/ouput, the only difference is being color-coded to make mixing up the plugs more difficult. HDMI is generally better for it's simplicity, but both the cables and compatible devices are much more expensive for the most part(two component A/V cables you buy for $2-3 each at Wal-Mart versus an HDMI cable that could cost you ten times as much easily).

If you already have anything that plugs in before your console's output reaches your TV(such as a sound system or some fancy-shmancy gaming headphones), make sure to plug that into whatever cable ends up connecting to your TV so your recording quality isn't effected. I have a set up similar to that, I record via an S-video output but play with an inferior image quality whenever I record.

That was more typing than I was expecting it to be...

EDIT: Also, file sizes be damned. The higher the quality of your audio or video, the higher the file size obviously. A video in fugly 360p with monaural sounds isn't going be a large file, while in stark contrast even a SHORT video recorded in 1080p with 7.1 surround sound is going to be SEVERAL gigabytes. Larger files also take much longer to upload, unless you decide to do live streaming instead.

    Upload versus streaming?

Uploading takes time and most places have fairly strict limits on file size/length for videos. Try any of these sites for uploading:

    http://www.youtube.com (fifteen minute/two gigabyte limit)
    http://www.dailymotion.com

Live streaming requires a solid connection and generally means that you CANNOT be hosting a game while you do so, you need hardware and drivers that are supported by the streaming site you choose, and depending on the site you may not have the option of saving the video at all. Try any of these sites for streaming:

    http://www.justin.tv
    http://www.livestream.com
    http://www.ustream.com

I *THINK* that about covers it.

EDIT 2: I do not approve of adding parenthesis to a URL that doesn't have a need for them!

Bloody hell, thanks for that. I'd have to go for a capture card, don't want anything too fancy. Won't be doing anything with audio or splitters either, just want to be able to record some decent quality footage. Is there any capture card you could recommend? As I said, my knowledge is barebones at best on this stuff, but I've always wanted to give it a shot. Thanks in advance for any other help.

I couldn't say, there's a myriad of options out there. You'd probably be best off searching Google to find one that has everything you're looking for in one(again: anything less than 480p is going to be fugly and stereo sound is pretty much a must) and then checking a few sites to see if you can find a good deal on one.

    http://www.newegg.com
    http://www.ebay.com
    http://www.craigslist.org

Newegg is a regular computer/accessory shop site, but occasionally they have some good deals or sales(such as being able to buy the parts to build a PC that could run two copies of Crysis on max settings at once for $200). That's not to say you'll get what you want there or that if they have that it'll be at a good price though. Black Friday is just around the corner, so maybe your chances will be better in a couple weeks :p

eBay is and has always been a good place to find things you can't find elsewhere or get a deal...but, caveat emptor! As a rule of thumb, avoid doing business with any sellers that have a feedback below 98% positive and haven't had an account for over three years. I also recommend avoiding actual auctions(especially Dutch auctions: ew!) strongly in favor of items with Buy It Now enabled. At times you may save more bidding low on an auction, but then you get into the fact that auction means you can be outbid or forced to pay more than you planned on paying...

Craig's List is just plain good. Local is always better for the most part. And it's 100% free. No charges for buying or selling(with a few exceptions).

EDIT: Oh, and a simpler alternative? Best Buy usually has at least a small selection of capture cards near the video cards.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that my local best Buy in Louisiana carried HD PVRs. Was sure I was going to have to order one.

Just had a look on Google for stuff and this is way more complicated than I was anticipating. I've no idea what card is going to work with my setup and most of the places I looked at for help may as well have been writing in Egyptian.

Apologies for being difficult here, this isn't really my forte. I've got a HD TV with AV and a HDMI connector and then a laptop with VGA, HDMI and multiple USB slots. I've no idea if it's even possible to get this working with a capture card. Any help people can give would be much appreciated and will be repaid with internet cookies.

I'd offer help but I'm pretty much new to the whole HD recording thing and am self-educating....myself.

    My Setup:
Xbox 360 to HD PVR Capture Card (Component Cables)
HD PVR to HDTV (Component Cables)
HD PVR to Dell Laptop (USB 2.0)
ArcSoft Capture/Conversion software (Bundled with HD PVR)
    Windows Movie Maker
    Youtube Uploader

This sounds promising, there's just one problem. Forgive my immense stupidity here, but I don't know what component cables actually are :p

I just really want to upload some Tank footage to this music.

Edit: Scratch that, a HD PVR is apparently 150. I'm starting to think I don't have the knowledge or money to set this up.
