http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhwuXNv8fJM tl;dr - If SOPA passes, Uber's forums/websites could be shut down if you were to post an copyright-infringing picture/link/etc on these forums. No ifs, ands or buts For example, my avatar could get them shut down
Some of you guy might have seen me complaining that I have to use a proxy server to watch a youtube video if you put some music instead of the game sound. More than half of the youtube links in off topic are virtually unaccessible for me unless I pretend to live in another country. Guess what, if this bill passes it is more than likely that you will share this experience with me. Even worse, a simple proxy solution will not help you. You will be locked out. Permanently. Using alternate DNS servers is NOT a recommended solution. Think about it this way: You want to post on the forum? We can no longer allow you to have a custom avatar. Signature under your post? Forget it. Post a link to an external website? Out of the question. Posting images? Nope. Attachments. Too dangerous. Every single post would have to be screened and moderated BEFORE it is posted. You have an urgent concern or need help with a technical issue? Take a number. One of us 2 moderators will forward your post and make it visible to the public. Eventually. Maybe. We would have to censor every single post. Yep, this is how bad this bill is if it passes.
The people deciding if it passes or not don't even know what the internet is, nor do they care what happens to it if they are pledged re-election funds from the huge number of interest groups fighting to make more money in any way possible.
I didn't know we were turning into a second-world country. Will we soon restrict movie content? Will we have separate coloured restrooms? Will we ban gay marriage?
I like how for some reason everyone is worried about SOPA when it was 'found' months after ACTA was, and they're essentially the same thing.
What's happening with SOPA? Has it gone through? The reason I'm asking is I heard about a Brit being extradited to the US because he had links to web sites on his site... even though it's not illegal to do so in the UK. WTF is that all about!!!!!! Does this mean we all have to remove links to other websites just in case?
Your icon alone would get you in trouble. SOPA was tabled and is going under heavy revision while PIPA trying to sneak by now that the hype of SOPA has died down. Anonymous is fighting the fight in their own little way which may or may not be incredibly harmful to the situation.
