So... yeah. Will anyone give me some advice/pointers and some places to look? I really don't know how to start, although I'm looking for the overall cost to be around $1000-1200. I'm pretty lost.

I haven't looked into new hardware for quite a while, so I'm not exactly up to speed. A few things though:
    - Do you really need a $1200 PC? I would look for a model for $999 and get some games to go with it.
    - If you know somebody who knows his way around PCs, you might want to build it yourself.
    - If not buy a complete system but not from Dell. Their sh!t is expensive and hard to upgrade.

What you want to look for:
    - Intel i5 or i7
    - 6 or more GB DDR3 RAM
    - decent graphics card ($150 -200)

I think this system should cover your needs just fine:

If you don't know how to fix a broken PC you might want to think about an extended warranty as well. :)

Save up for a new graphics card ever 2-3 years, $200 should be enough. Good luck!

Regarding the processor: If you go for i5 or i7 go for "Sandy Bridge" only.
I might edit this post later today with some stuff.

This would be something I would go for if I had 1000:
    - Case: Thermaltake Element S - 91
    - Mainboard: GIGABYTE GA-H67A-USB3-B3 - 102
    - Processor: i5-2500 - 189
    - RAM: Anything with 6GB+ and two sticks - 40
    - Graphics card: Somewhat difficult choice; Sapphire HD6850 - 142
    - HDD: Some 1TB drive for the start - ~75
    - CPU fan: Scythe Rasetsu - 45
    - CD/DVD drive: 20 scrub one

Don't think I forgot anything. That would be 704 which is around 1000$.

graphics card i would recommend a gtx 560ti is a good mid range card, if you want a higher one 570 or radeon 6970, nvidia seems to have better drives but they are pretty even
