The voip. Without this working reliably and with volume controls in game, the communication on teams is pretty much non existant. TF2 works so well because of VOIP.

Many will scream about vent or other voip.. but this does not work for pubs. Everyone must be hooked up to it, even if they do not talk back... at least they can hear.

In addition to encouraging teamwork, it would allow veterans to help explain the mechanics to the new players(which turrets NOT to buy for example).

Really, the rest of the game means nothing if it is chaos on the battlefield.

I've literally never seen somebody in TF2 using the VoIP for actually useful things since pubs are completely random anyway and for everything else there are services.

That is unfortunate for you. The server I play on in TF2(osfhome.com) always has voip users... Usually 3-5 per team at any given time. I wouldn't play it any other way.

And no, there are no other services that allow everyone else on your team to hear... just maybe a friend or 2.. which is still not a team, just a handful of players on one side... which unbalances the game, giving those few an unfair advantage. VOIP for all makes it balanced for everyone.

    Sooooo, one server? Awesome.

Yeah, except like, Mumble, Teamspeak, Ventrilo, Steam...
If your team doesn't want to communicate then I guess it's not a team, but rather pub players.

Completely ignoring aim, experience, premium and things like that of course.

If VoIP is your biggest concern in this game then you have a pretty weird priority list.

If Voip is his main concern, then he's not worrying about the non-existant class tutorials, repetitive maps, and lack of common sense in teammates.

Leave him be good sir :3

Oh, I have more servers in tf2, I just belong to OSF, so I don't need to go elsewhere often.. but I do have a handful of backups.

Yeah, those outside programs don't include half of your team...

And yes, communication in a team based game is number 1 priority.. otherwise it is just chaos and lone wolfing...

Nope, that is wrong and there's plenty of evidence for it.

It is wrong that communication is needed in a team based game?... Great, thanks!

I start to think that you have a reading problem, which is sad.

What's wrong with the in-game VOIP?
    I've used it successfully.
I found I had to turn down the volume of the music etc... but once I did that, I can hear people pretty clearly, and to the best of my knowledge, haven't had any problems with reliability of it. At least nobody has reported that I was breaking up or anything like that. But then again... maybe they couldn't hear me... so didn't know to report a problem???

I think I might have Steam set to transmit voice whenever it detects voice however, and I still have to press a key (T) in-game to transmit my voice. Is that the problem you're referring to?

    I'm being nice.

Though, how about you contributing? That gonna happen?

    Wow really?

Priorities differ from person to person and for this guy, communication is HIS top priority. It doesn't matter that it is not yours. It is not mine either but that is moot.

A moderator giving you a warning is contributing to this thread since your are being an *** to the OP. I think his contribution is better than your combativeness.

The OP was saying that VOIP is important FOR A PUB because it is the default voice communication that comes with a game and you don't have to rely on everyone on your PUB TEAM signing into a 3rd party voice communication program. So yes, like you said, his team must be a pub because that is what he is talking about...a pub.

...and while nice is a relative term, you are being no where near it to the OP.

    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Back on topic for the OP...I am not sure why you are having so many issues with the in game VOIP unless you mean that not many people use it in a pub. I use it and I have heard a few others use it as well, but I agree that there is either something wrong with many players' set ups, or just not many are utilizing it.

And how is voice communication the number one problem, regardless of priorities? I can think of one that is far bigger: Actually implementing something that keeps new players playing and better VoIP is not the solution.

You can do well in a pub regardless of communication if you actually know what the hell you can do and are supposed to do, which newsflash, new players don't.
New players don't know how to use smoke bomb effectively, how to bomb jump, how to charge correctly with the assault (i.e. bouncing off surfaces), what does actual damage to what, etc.

You can't have a babysitter in every game telling people how to play, that is the developers job.

Better VoIP can be implemented, yes, but Jesus, that is not the issue here.

Sorry, but that's what PM's are for. If he is just writing off-topic stuff then please in the sub-forum made for that. He is a mod, he should know that.

These are great points...particularly the babysitter line. I think a lot of people want that because there is such a lack of (and I hate to sound repetitive as many are saying it) tutorials etc. to show people how to play and what everything means.

I get where you are coming from.

I give my warnings in whatever way I see fit. Posting a warning in a thread can be a good reminder for forum rule #1:
Of course if you would like another formal warning, I'll be happy to oblige!

Better voip is needed. That is true but I think player retention, better base level of player education and the recent changes are higher.

Still I wonder what would it be like to have good voip.

I had more success today with the voip... Turning off the commentator(which got old super fast) helped in hearing people tremendously. I do think that adding a volume control for voip(receiving and transmitting) as well as having a microphone test in game would help promote its use. I also think that adding an icon on your OWN screen when transmitting will let people know when it is outgoing successfully(tf2 does this).

I've never been crazy about snipers, which is more of a problem in this game because of how open the maps are and how easy getting to higher ground is... and I do not like the other one hit kill which is the SIN stabs... but they aren't the end of the world.

    I concur.
Having an icon that indicates that you're transmitting voice would be nice.
