Games have definitely become faster paced to serve the more casual crowd. I remember many games with campaigns of dozens of hours. ( i think Tiberium Wars had 10 hours per faction, and three factions). Nowadays around 8 seems to be the standard, and BF1 didn't even bother with a single campaign and made 5 or so mini-campaigns.
It's not to suit 'causal' players- it's because a shorter campaign costs less to do On the flip side, I do think that these days the expectation on the *quality* of a single player campaign is quite high- we expect full high quality cinematics, full voice acting and such. It's not like the early days of single player where you got a page of text between missions and then nothing beyond the base game for the playble portions (e.g. the original TA campaign). So it's at least partially a case of quality (at least from a production view point- the writing is often still awfully cringe worthy compared to TV / Film) over quantity
this could qualify for a number of threads here. I'm going to leave it here though http://store.steampowered.com/app/469820/
