    Hello all,

Somehow, because i know how to attach a picture to an email, i've been elected/forced into being the tech guy at the chateau where i work.
There's a renovation project going on at the moment. They are developing a new part, and adding another 10 bedrooms. I've been asked to look into getting the whole internet thing set up. Basically all the rooms will be running the televisions off netflicks, and the whole place needs flooding with wifi.
The question is what kind of setup will we need?
    Thanks in advance.

What's the quality of the Internet to the building like?

There's no point doing anything if the place is running dialup.

Also if at all possible use a wired connection for the tv's.... I know from personal experience that Netflix over WiFi is terrible....

Ideally there'd be an ethernet port in each room. You just plug the TVs into that.

    Set it all on fire.

Failing that, get one central high-quality router and Wi-Fi extenders (multiple routers causes issues).

Thanks a lot dudes. My bad should have put more details.
Cat 5 cabling in every room already done. No incoming line as yet.
So what's the size of the fat pipe we should be asking off orange?
    Will we need a server?
Sadly we are based in France in the middle of nowhere.
Hope that's okay. I will be asking more questions!
    Thanks again guys

Are you really sure you want to do this yourself? This sounds like a rather complicated job for which you need the right (reliable) equipment and expertise. Additionally, you'll likely be blamed for all of the problems that will pop up for years to come.

There are going to be lots of complicated little details, I think. For instance, this is in Netflix' Terms of Use (emphasis mine):
    (source)
A quick search doesn't show a business account or anything like that.

You might want to consider trying to get your boss to hire a specialist.

Yeah, there is probably some way around that. Contacting Netflix would be the first step for that one. I was just giving an example of one of those many tiny little things that you normally wouldn't think about, but that an experienced IT professional (hopefully) would.

Thanks again guys. Yeah I am hoping to get someone into to do this, I really just wanted to know what to ask for. I would avoid this task like the plague, but that's not how it works in this company. I usually paint things!
As always the budget is probably way too small for the task at hand.
I'm going to get my boss to clarify what she wants, and get back in touch.
And what would you think the size of the feed/pipe from the phone company would be?

well why didn't you mention you were in france?

well for the "fat pipe" you are basically obliged to demand "la fibre" and no less from orange or you're not going to be able to make this work. (and I think we're going for a typical home user's subscription rather than their "pro" gamut here (because the latter is not for TV))

it's possible with their service to offserve multiple TVs with a single router even if you duplicate the ports a whole lot with switches so long as you buy a orange decoder for each and every room.

apparently the forfait Jet fibre (500Mb/s down 200 up) of orange could do for about 10-15 rooms. you didn't say how many rooms there were though.

I'd say the simplest approach would be to multiply these offers you order times the number of rooms / 10. then when you're planning the line setups with the orange technicians (france telecom is now owned by orange and yes that means you have to pay them for the line installation) you be explicit about the fact the fibre outlets for the Orange Boxes have to be "here here and here"... you split them out evenly along the chateau. They'll want to make them all come out the same place but trust me it'll be more expensive for you if you let them do that and then purchase the sufficient length of fiber optics to go feed each box at it's respective location all the way from the place in the chateau where they'll have placed the outlet or outlets. And you really really wanna be having outlets for your case. Trust me the technicians are going to try their damn hardest to rip you off on this because they're lazy and wanna spend the least time possible on an installation. If ever they have to come back to bring construction equipment to get through walls and stuff they'll whine and whinge like you've never seen a grown man do. But make 'em do it because once again they may charge alot but it'll be nothing compared to what it would cost you to do it yourself. Plus the high debit fiber optics they use and the in-home one you'd buy are not the same and don't fare as well over longer distances. If the chateau is really huge you'll loose a lot of debit if you cable the rooms with fiber optics rather then Cat 5 or 6.

So why am I making you send the routers throughout the castle rather then leave 'em all in the lobby and Cat5 your way into each room?

because the routers are also pretty good wifi hubs. The speed's not the question when I say "pretty good" on that account they're top notch. you couldn't get better. it's more of a question of range. and these only get to about 20 meters through ceilings and floors and walls. Not bad but you'll probably get less; I'm guessing your castle has authentic stone walls?

you can always use this if needed : http://assistance.orange.fr/objets-...extender-200-mbits-s-presentation_78980-79951

but my guess was that since we're setting up a box per 10 rooms these 10 rooms are quite close together and these boxes could be more then enough in that case were they evenly distributed.

couple of questions remain. if this setup would be enough or if it would be important that a user could walk throughout the entire chateau on one unique connection. In which case you can forget about setting up the routers any other pace then the lobby or even getting so many or even leaving their wifi on. You pick one of the routers and it's gonna be the WIFI one (perhaps reserve this one exclusively for Wifi as letting it do both TV and wifi might lead to the poor sods who'se rooms are cabled with that router having their TV become unresponsive when the wifi is being used alot (I speak about this from personal experience)) then you purchase what we call "Points D'accès"; "Access Point" or "Répeteur" which are what you'll place throughout the hotel and you'll be able to have a unique connection for all those different hubs allowing you to walk freely between them without being disconnected.

I'd recommend not going for the low prices here given the terrain you have to cover; the number of people you have to offserve (this isn't a home use scenario that all these 50buck access points were conceived for); and lastly the fact you're probably up against stone walls. Wifi's worst adversary.

this is the kind of thing we're looking for : http://www.materiel.net/reseau/cisc...3;60841;1784&gclid=CJOf5MSMqsoCFQueGwodx2MA_A

So what'll it be option A or B?

Calling up orange would be best. as you could clear up a ton of this with them on the phone.
