Sorry, for being late to the party.

I just quote what @violetania said, because I think this is important. Especially looking at the state of education here in Europe I think we will hit dark times again. You can not constantly cut down education and then wonder why people follow egocentric warmongers, who just play with peoples fears.
Education, well-being and health should be independent from the origin of you social status you were born in.

I once worked for a company, where the CEO said: "You have to target for the billion, to earn your first million". It may be a bit over the top. But I think there is a bit truth in it. You should always look at where you want to be, instead of looking what you can practically achieve, because it might hamper you to get any better then you thought you are.

BUT that CEO didn't say "You have to target for all the money in the world, to earn your first million".
And so begins my liberal attack to violetania... :D

    1. A equality utopia is impossible. There is no room for us all to have a huge house in a tropical paradise. Most of us want the best house and we decide who get it with money.

2 .Everybody wanna be like Jesus but no one wanna live like him, he got thousands of millions followers without a single selfie! Are you donating almost all your money to people in worse conditions?

3 .I like to think in possitive. People are not unlucky or lucky, people are a little lucky or a very lucky. Without any help humans are screwed up when they are born. Worst scenarios: you are born alone in a dessert and your mother dies giving birth or you are born with a problem in your heart and die a few minutes later=you have no luck at all. From that kind of birth conditions people can be more lucky. I mean, what is the goal for the utopia? Everybody completely healthy? or everybody equally healthy (clones )?

    4. Usain Bolt didn't need money or a good school to triumph he had other things and nobody would have known what he needed from the moment he was born.
Diversity is good. Ok, waste a little money on every child till we see what he likes/is good at doing. Good marks: free university, bad marks no university for you (unless your parents pay of course!)

    5. My last idea is that money should buy important things. I spend most of my daytime working to get money. Money not to buy my kid the last call of duty, but to do something good for him, to make him be healthy and prepared. That's what I work for.

No comunism, looks good on the paper but is an utopia. No social justice, it is unjust. Yes to Solidarity! and that's the right word to call it, because it is not our resposability to repair this unfair universe but we are awesome and help each other anyways!

Pretty sure 99.99% of the resources of our solar system have not yet been touched by humanity. There is enough space in space and enough raw resources all over the place out there. Let's aim for it at least. Really I'd love a little place on the moon, the only bad part is the ping of my internet connection up there would suck.

Also on 2: If I had to chose what fictional character I want to be, I can think of soooo many better alternatives to "jesus".

Money buying really important things is wishful thinking though. "Real" happiness in the end the ultimate achievement and that isn't for sale.

I think Jesus existed, only that he didn't have superpowers xD

The point with the resources is that no matter how much I have, I want to have more than my neighbour. Nowadays in some countries we have a lot and I still want a boat!

Being happy is easier if you don't have painful stones in your kidney. What I would find bad is that you could only use money to spoil your children and show off with a stupid 1000$ jacket.

Meh I don't begrudge anyone their success. The attitude towards some of the uber devs when things were going well for them was poor imo.

It takes a lot of work, luck and dedication to make something of a business, often never leading to anything.

It's also very easy to see someone who's spent money on something nice and assume they do nothing good. Someone needn't donate every penny to charity and live on bread and water in order to make a positive impact imo.

That drive is what makes humanity actually progress though. If humans would tend to be happy with what they already have progress would stop.

"What they already have" is meant in a lot more broader sense here. I am meaning the very general situation.
People might not be happy with their social situation, the social situation of others, their bank account, how many boats they have, how much food they have to eat, how long their lifetime is, how much they know about black holes, etc pp and strive to improve it as well.

The strive to want "more" in the broad sense is very important for every progress humans ever made. If you don't want more at all you're basically happy living in a cave somewhere hoping to find food to survive the next day.
The means which people use to get more makes this often seem as evil greed and look really bad (or at least be pointless to the great picture), but the more I think about it the desire for a better situation is the most important factor in human evolution and especially in the evolution of our technology. Greed for unlimited knowledge in a way is what made scientists want to figure out the world and solve problems others had not even thought about, in the end improving the live of billions of humans over the ages. What causes greed to look bad is solely the implementation. If implemented under a strict regime of whatever set of ideal ethical values you deem "perfect" then in a way greed is what will help push humanity further and further forever. Even when technology will have solved all our world problems and we all live in paradise our greed will drive us out further to reach for the stars and never stop.

... or somebody greedy for destruction decides to blow up earth, but oh well there is risk to everything ;)

Though I am positive in the grand scheme of things we won't hit dark ages again. Yes a lot of things will be flat out horribly wrong all the time, but of all ages I've been told about the current one is the best to live in by FAR and if you think about how the recent developments of technology start to exponentially help to develop even more amazing technology even faster (I mean consider what the development of the internet actually means for the spread of knowledge) it's virtually unthinkable to me that it'll all break down again. It might pain the heart of idealists to see all the evil in the world, but the overall line still will be that development will advance faster and faster, until we reach a point were many problems that cause evil are just flat out solved by making them too easy to solve to fight over them anymore.

    Sorry. I lied to you.
He wasn't talking about money. The statement related to a special device (or user). Back at this time, I did some research, because it sounded like a really bold statement and - like I expected - it turned out that according to the market analysis available there where only a market of 500 million users at this time.

I left this company long ago, but I'm pretty sure the market has since then eclipsed 1 billion, so as stupid as it sounded back then, the aim was right in the long term.
    Well, you gotta aim high!

    Interesting thread.

As a whole, I think a lot of the negativity is good because it shows people are dissatisfied with the current status quo. This is a normal reaction for humans. Expressing this feeling is good. As someone who generally has a melancholy outlook, its nice to see that other people recognize that there are issues. It gives me hope for humanity.

Will people ever be able to overcome the human condition? In my perspective this answer is no because ideals are not practical. They often conflict with each other. I know this may seem vague, but I think this is a true statement that develops over time.

Does this mean we don't attempt to achieve this ideal? No. As a whole we will attempt to get arbitrarily close to it, but never actually achieving it. It helps give us hope. This is what makes us human.

Chasing these ideals is Like a dog chasing tires. If we catch them........ Splat!

Usually people offer to help old people to cross the road.

Today I saw an old man offer a blind man help to cross the road.

Are you happy now @violetania ? I'm spreading love and happiness!

Can I go back to being cynical now? Please?

Wow i didn't realise people were still posting... guess i should of turned on notifications >.<
@Geers NEVER!!!! Always be lovely and kind ^^
@gmase I wouldn't say i live like a pauper as jesus did... but i would consider myself relatively charitable???? Like i'll always give money to the homeless i see, buskers, and others.

My idea of a utopia is everyone having access to the same or similar basic needs. In todays society, most people value wealth and material goods... but i think if we conditioned out kids to value intellectual supremacy over money then a lot of problems would be solved, people will work harder and show off with their knowledge rather than their wealth. Which leads me on to my next point.

I'm not saying we all have to live in a mansion complete with a swimming pool and tennis court. I'm saying that everyone should have access to the same basic needs. No one should have to starve, no one should be homeless, AND EVERYONE SHOULD BE EDUCATED!!!!! I mean to your point on luck, yes a lot of people get unlucky... but is it their fault???
For example, imagine 2 babies, one is from an average family as we know it and the other one lives in the 3rd world. The average family gets the recommended vaccinations because they're paid for by the government or because the family can afford it. The other baby may grow up suffering from a range of illnesses because they parents couldn't afford the vaccinations. Is it the babies fault? No, then why should it have to pay for it?
    See my point maybe???
Theres' lot of other examples like education... for a long time i thought it was normal to go to junior school, middle school, senior school, uni and then maybe masters/phd. That's what i'm doing, that's what all my friends are doing.... but my boyfriend teaches chess and he came home one day and said hey... on the highest achievers for this high school i taught at... only 2 people went to uni... the rest got apprenticeships or went to tafe.... and a lot of people dropped out.
Again, my question is, yes Australia is relatively fair in terms of uni and yes kids do get to choose how much education they got.... But those kids got brought up in a different environment to the one i got brought up with... is it fair on them? I mean they probably could have done just as well or better if they were in my seat.
Yes no one will ever be the same... but we need to try and close the gap. Repeating from earlier... its appalling that we have an epidemic of obesity while there are so many people starving.
I mean Australia is by no means perfect, but i understand it's politics the most i suppose... everyone in Australia pays taxes, and the government provides education, roads, health care... Imo there really shouldn't be countries... i mean why divide a group that is the same? We're all human, why should we be divided? I mean keep the culture, but there really should just be one government for the world, everyone pays taxes to the government, and the government will spread it out and make sure no one is starving or sleeping on the streets.

I mean i do agree, diversity is good, if we didn't have diversity we wouldn't have so many different types of music or art.... and poverty has spawned some very well respected people... but i think if taught right, humans will be capable of achieving great things while being content with the material goods they have... money isn't everything =P

Lastly i just want to say.... i agree it's not everyone's job to fix the disparities... but it should be!!!! What goes around comes around, a good portion of china was poor, so all the companies moved their factories there for cheap labor, now china is a pollution power house. Poor undeveloped countries will sell their land for wood... and then you end up endangering species. I mean for gods sake if everyone just made up and stop fighting wars we'd have enough money to feed everyone starving person in the third world. ARGH >.<

Anyways, i guess the difference in everyone's argument is human nature. I personally think that human nature can be altered for the good and we can work even as we are content but i suppose others dont? Ahahah oh well

Anyways, where there is kindness, there is goodness and where there is goodness, there is magic. <3 And if we're all lovely to each other, everything will sort it's self out and life will be amazing =3

    End rant.
(P.s. haven't slept all night so if my rant is incoherent or i completely missed the point i'm sorry >.< ahaha)

@violetania I understand your point about the 2 babies, but I see at least 2 problems with that:

    1. How much money (and other immaterial things) is enough for the baby? More than in Uganda, around Spanish middle class or Dubai wealthiest? I guess the more money the better, although that could also be bad for the boy. My father had to work really hard to pay for his studies, I didn't (because he paid for me) and guess who studied harder.
    2. Quantum mechanics.

About countries, I don't like them either. But if there were only one bunch of idiots ruling the world, how could we scape from them? This way we can see what works and what doesn't.

And about human nature... as they taught me at cryptography, you can't forget about Chuck. And I can guarantee you, there are freaking lots of them.

It was a good "rant" and you taught me a new word :)

    John Stuart Mills?

I think they cover utilitarianism in an intro to philosophy course in college. He has some wonderful essays describing this concept. Granted, there are many manifestations of this particular concept, like socialism or communism, but its a good idea overall.

Darn you gmase and your pragmatic approach to the whole thing.

@gmase and @walmartdialup... i guess I've never thought too much into it, my belief has always been in the good of people, people will only take what they need and if you are good to others, everything will work out.

Kind of like in Cinderella 2015 where Ella was content to work hard while being treated so poorly because she believed in kindness and something greater than material goods <3

But.................... you're all going to tell me to stop day dreaming and i guess you're right. But we can hope!!! <3
Oh well i guess this topic is pretty much covered unless there's something I've missed =P

Also on cryptography... do you do ctfs??? =D

edit: speaking of Cinderella... might as well post a picture, while we're talking about her... i don't think I've really found a picture of hope and the good of human nature from Cinderella but i guess this ones rather pretty.... i swear i just listen to Disney movies while i study keep me happy! >.< ahahah <3

@tunsel11 I think superpower is almost as good as miracle to describe it. Anyways, using a picture of Jesus as a meme seems to me much more offensive to the religion, to ppl who believe it, to their dogs and to their dogs' fleas.

Did you happen to fail your writing courses in uni violetania? :p

Might be in your best interest to clean up your writing a bit otherwise the habit developed from this could negatively impact real work.
