True, maybe I'm way off and uber will release a huge new content patch next week, can't say anything for sure.

Just my gut feeling is otherwise (note I could see additional work on the wider game system, the outages on the ladder make me wonder if that's being worked on).

Sad to see this happen. Good luck @Sorian and @mkrater.

Relax everyone. Every prior annihilation game got abandoned within a couple of years and the communities persisted. Even TA, 18 years old now, still has an active community, especially for the largest mod Escalation. Uber has no reason to kill the servers even if they stop development, and even if they did, we could still use tungle or hamachi. PAT will persist.

This is pretty much what I was thinking. If development really is ready to enter a new maintenance phase, that would be good news for people looking to make bigger mods. Up until now the constant game patches have made it pretty hard to justify putting in the effort needed to fully balance a mod.
