I still play DEFCON pretty often, it's about 9 years old now. Too bad the multiplayer scene is pretty much dead :/
I sometimes play Broodwar, X-Wing vs TIE Fighter and Total Annihilation Zero on Gameranger. I also played KKND Extreme and Shadow Warrior lately. Just Singleplayer though. There are lots of old gems on gog.com.
After reading a number of articles about the space sim genre all touting that freespace / freespace 2 were the best games ever made in that niche, I decided to get them on gog. So far played through the opening to freespace, to be honest I'm not that impressed. I don't see it as a patch in wing commander 3, mainly because the voice acting is so wooden. Still it plays pretty well for an old game and isn't hurting my eyes despite its age so that's a plus.
I recommend playing the freespace one campaign with the freespace 2 engine. There is a mod for fs2. My personal favourite space sim list is the following: 1. X-Wing and TIE series (TIE Fighter was my favourite here but i also liked XvT in multiplayer) 2. Freespace and Descent series 3. Wing Commander Series 4. Starlancer There are a bunch of cool mods for the freespace 2 engine, for example Diaspora and Wing Commander Saga.
I'll give the update a go thanks! Also I love wing commander saga, so well done. I haven't played that much of freespace yet so I might not be giving it a fair appraisal. I do love the wing commander games though, even prophecy and the secret ops expansions. I was never overly impressed with the x wing games, but then I'm not a massive star wars fanatic (don't get me wrong, love the films, just not as religiously as some). I agree tie fighter was nice though. I think CR missed a trick never doing a kilrathi game as their ships looked so awesome....
Lego Racers and Lego Racers 2. My god what endless fun. Best named place: Sandy Beach. Sandy.....Beach.
Advance Wars. Best GBA game ever made. Still play it regularly, with friends. Haven't played any Fire Emblem though. I hope a new AW game comes out in the next couple years... now that Nintendo is going for mobile too. I'm also going back to Civilization Call to Power. Something that I barely played, but had it for years. My dad used to play that a lot, until Civ 5 came out years later. It's an interesting (non-Sid Meier) Civ game, but it has a lot of cool stuff that no other civ game has (except Beyond Earth maybe) such as space units and cities, underwater colonies, super-futuristic units and extremely hardcore global warming that could tear the world apart literally. And occasionally, I play some Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds or some good old Age of Empires 2.
Just decided, on a whim, to fire up Metroid Prime again. Wow. I now hate Thardus again. That stupid roll attack that's impossible to dodge when he just runs right at you keeps killing me.
