Edit: sorry i just realised how long it is.... >. <

I would like to pose a philosophical question to the community of pa, and the streamers esp.

Often I have heard of complaints how female streamers steal views and get more money due to their gender and because some of them choose to show cleavage. Sure the idea that there are some in the community who just want to look at a girl is normal but have you ever considered....

The amount of abuse we get about our appearance, including but not limited to, our choice of clothing, the amount or lack of cleavage we show, unwanted sexual advances, being called an ugly porn cam girl, constant jokes about how our streams are a joke because we only get viewers due to our gender....
Sure there will be always trolls in the community, if I play badly, fair enough, flame me. But being commented on my appearance and lack of cleavage when male streamers get to sit in their pajama tshirt seems a little unfair to me.
Also have you ever considered that maybe people choose to watch a girl over a guy because they have different personalities among many other things?

I think if you guys want to balance the playing field so that girls don't attract more money and views, some of you need to stop alienating us and treating us like meat.
People I've met in this community include an accountant, multiple transgenders who are brave enough to tell the world, a pro rugby player, construction workers, amazing coders, psychologists, artists... There are so many different and interesting people out there isn't it better to learn from the world they've seen as opposed to alienating them?

I love streaming because I love having the opportunity to teach and be taught, and it's a nice way of making friends and I use cam because I enjoy streams where the streamer is talking to their audience so please be nicer?

Also on a completely different topic, a lot of people say that always complain how superficial some women can be. Remember how I was discussing the objectification of women by male viewers and streamers? If all you ever talk about it how a girl looks and her boobs rather than all her other traits such as her intellect, it will become the only thing she cares about because it will be the only thing she feels like she will find any worth in. I was in the top class of every school I ever went to, I learnt ballet, piano, guitar, ballroom, swimming, tennis, martial arts, singing among an assortment of other things, looks was possibly one of the only thing I didn't care about.... until I started getting bullied at school for wearing pants and my boyfriend started commenting that my boobs weren't big enough and that I was... round. That with the lack on acknowledgement that distinctions and high distinctions were good enough, my appearance became my obsession. I'm not looking for any pity, the point of this is to make a point, some of the female streamers maybe smart about how to make money but some of them probably feel that it's their only worth so stop making fun of them! I have huge problem with objectifing myself but even at one point I was ready to pull out the low cuts because I just wanted people to like me instead of telling me to be more like Jenny the squirrel.

I know this is a huge rant but if guys talk about how it's unfair because women get this and that, how about you look at your own actions first and treat us equally? And if any one of you objectifies your partner like how I am being objectified by some, think about what it's doing to them.

End rant and sorry. I just had to say something.

I only saw the tail end of it in the PA chat history and only got that some people had said nasty stuff. Although one apologized profusely claiming that he was joking. Still, I struggle to understand why many men (well, I don't exaclty how many, but too many) think that's ok behaviour. Or consistently underestimating somebody's abilities when they learn that that person is female. It's just bizarre. (e.g. relevant XKCD)

Anyway, I too hope your "rant" will make people think about how their actions make other people feel.

It's saddening that this is a thing... I must admit @violetania I thought you were brave to have your webcam on a public stream... I don't think I'd risk it, despite being a bloke. Sadly people on the net can be real idiots at times :(

If you could only see the amount of mail I get asking for more cleavage when I stream.

But yeah I understand where you are coming from, people troll when they can see an opportunity to troll. You wear your heart on your sleeve so are pretty easy to get a reaction from. That's not a bad thing in real life but maybe on stream.

If you see someone streaming with cam they usually have confidence or have a thick skin. If I got called ugly , fat or a cleavage whore I would just read out the comment and say that's a little harsh. Except cleavage whore. I would say thank you because for me that's a compliment. Troll then gone and you have your regular watchers help you out.

While I fully support women taking greater strides towards *leveling the playing field", so to speak, just remember that many of the men on the internet are complete buffoons who like to express themselves in interesting and sometimes hilarious ways. Many of these things are fairly crude, including objectifying women.

Sorry. It's not something we can control - self-control is all we have. The other jerks? No idea. Mind control isn't a thing yet. ;)

A bunch of 12 year olds....shouldnt really reflect the sentiment of all other viewers.
The other problem is that there are so few female streamers and gamers (for core games) that each time you come across one its a bit of a surprise/anomaly.
Even for me, in teamspeak or any voice chat its always a bit of a surprise when a random player (that is female) responds or states anything.

Back in the olden days We Men Treated our womens with respect.....
Teasing and Flirting were part of the courting ritual or with our women folk it was upon their acceptance into our ranks.
With The invention of the interwebs. The conduct of men has degraded to very poor levels. The Nosebreaker blames easily accesable pron....
The conduct and appearance of the women have also lowered over this time.... what ever happend to sun dresses :(
How ever The Gentler members of the sexes will always be casualties due to society degradation......
as a famous guy from your generation probably said some time.. Hate the haters not the game, pass go and collect two hundred dollars!

I think you take the bait too well. I wouldn't even be surprised if most players are just screwing with you cause your response is so good. I know thats my reason for it. Yolo your way through the stream and all and its all good. Cya soon!

I prefer @clopse shaved chest though maybe even more when it was hairy. I dunno he never sended me pictures when he shaved it.

I agree completely with the OP and I find it sad that we're already starting down the victim blaming path, that violetania needs to adjust, that she reacts too easily. The suggestion that it's for people to change their behaviour because of trolls or bigots is offensive.

Someone says something you don't like on your stream you swing that ban hammer because it's not worth wasting precious seconds of your life on them.

There's no need to put up with shitty human beings in your life, no matter the medium. Be who you are and hang with people accepting of that. If you feel the need to change for others than you should ditch those others.

Here's my take on women in streaming/game development/everything:

    I DON'T CARE!

Your lead writer is a woman? That's great but is she a good writer?

If everyone just stopped giving a crap the world would be a better place. Because it doesn't make a difference if the streamer is an Asian man from Kenya or a kiwi woman living in Sweden. What matters is whether they're doing a good job.

The fact it's still 'a thing' that a woman does something 'unusual' is 90% of the problem.

I remember going on a business training course as part of an apprenticeship thing I did during my first job. We had 2 old (ex military I believe) guys running this course, and one of the sessions involved a discussion including the topic "the pro's and cons of allowing women in the work place". Out of a group of 20 (including 3 women, I'm an engineer so the field is rather male dominated), I was the only one who objected to this?! I mean *really*?

The ironic thing is that the group were so anti racism it was silly- yet discriminating against women was apparently ok. The reaction I got for raising an objection (including from one of the women) was that I was a raving lunatic :/

This was in 2006, sometimes reality is just bizarre.... /rant.

Yes, but that is no reason to behave differently to people than you would in real life... I don't really think there is a difference between 'internet me' and 'real life' me for my behaviour.

Here's an example from a Twitter troll who actually was jailed for it. Though her behaviour was more extreme with death threats...
BBC.com "Twitter troll: What I said was utterly appalling and disgusting"

Many people are just mean in 'real life' too of course...
