    Please?

I love looks and style of metal planets, but I hate that every game that has death star in it turns into orbital race -> huge fortress on metal -> boom.

Then, if this is editor option, lazorless planet should just have an icon in browser/lobby indicating it does not have lazor.

AND/OR there could be catalyst cost modifier in lobby. Like, 5x cost for catalyst, when you want a game ender in large system, but don't want game to end within 15 minutes.

The editor should allow people to edit this and place laser sports whereever they want.
I think currently it probably is already possible to block the slots for lasers by making a custom map that simply has a csg brush that blocks the place.

    *Obligatory "It's laser!" Post here.*

Anyway, you might be able to edit the map in the new editor to disclude them... or you could make a server mod! Easy peasy too.

But every time I click "edit csg' on metal planet, everything screws up.

I know I can do this, and I have successfully done this (replaced lazors with cool looking metal planet crater, one that is not used in random generation). However, planet still had blue marks on it. And all the csg were realigned randomly after I entered edit mode, had to rotate everything back into place >_<

This would be awesome! Server mods could add new units that only fit on top of control points. TA-style thermal vents would become possible. king of the hill game modes could use it and let you build special defense towers on these. I am imagining mods that have 5 or 6 choices of structures and you just need to pick one for each control point. Unless the models fit together like mexes do, which would allow upgrades to these structures. So many possibilities!

actually.... hmm. You can define buildings to require certain features below them. At the core both mex and metal planet spots work just like that. Just the way they are spawned is ... magical. The only missing link is that I think there still (?) is no way to force the feature to be in a specific location. If however Uber makes features placeable one by one in the editor you can at least invent some new feature-key and have buildings require that feature below them. You can probbaly invent a new type right now, but you may be unable to place them on fixed locations.
@wondible is the expert on that I think
The metal planets have more magic going on than that though, no idea how the whole "planet is shooting" mechanic works.

@guest1 and I spent some time looking for ways to force control points to show up where we wanted them, but it doesn't seem possible. You are correct though that if we could do this, we would have the last piece that we need to make this work. Another interesting mod idea that is possible right now is to create structures that only fit on metal spots, forcing you to make hard choices about whether you want metal or something else. This one is less interesting to me and I would really prefer a whole new terrain feature for that purpose. control points seem like a promising way to make this happen if we could manually place them.

I haven't actually done anything with them yet. Keep in mind that "feature type" and "has strategic icon" aren't necessarily the same thing, so be careful how you test success. Judging from the icon file, it's based on the feature file name, not the feature-type attribute.

Yeah, just remove "control points" from the unitlist.json, and the lasers are gone. Name the mod "removed metalplanet lasers"

U got the boss-metal map that is smashed and doesn't function. Use this for multiplanet systems. Singleplanet systems are no problem whatsoever. I think the disable isn't needed since we can decide what to do in the system designer.

I tried using this one, it differs from normal metal significantly.

So use a server mod, that is exactly like vanilla, except a unitlist.json that does not list the control module.

its actually kinda weird that we cant go lower then 500, back way in the when in the beta if you went below 500 it would bugg out and do...crazy things, then uber implemented a style of metal planet for under 500, which was really awesome! and....NOW ITS GONE! try to force a system to get that >500 metal planet and the system doesnt load...as it perfectly did in the beta....wtf? im sure theres a mod out there that fixes uber's shenanigans of forcing annihilazer on us like that but to lazy =P
unless im completely wrong and uber has fixed the >500 metal planet lock recently, then yell at me for it :p

    Actually, it's 'Annihilaser'...

And we could bring back < 500 radius metal planets, but they would be with out the Annihilaser on them. If the metal.json is changed to allow for < 500 radius planets they should just work afaik. It was disabled because we were worried about people being confused why some metal planets didn't have the weapon.
