Supreme Commander and PA fans alike, Hear! Hear! Ok I'm only midway through the movie but I've gotta say this now. Ender's Game is such a freaking great time for anyone who enjoys strategy and beautifully done CGI. this movie is absolutely stunning. I know recommendations don't always work and everything is subjective (heck everyone's been screaming about interstellar I just found it really disappointing (far-fetched black hole, and time travel theories, terrible acting with some exceptions, very globally spread emotional detachment or rather wrong time and place for "Clint-Eastwood-I'm-way-too-cool" type emotionlessness, incapacity to have a viewpoint switch, stuff like that.) ) but this one. Wow. It's my pilot candidate meets evangelion meets PA meets supreme commander come to life. the characters are believable for once too. they make them say the right things so that they remain consistent throughout. you can get into their heads. you totally find courses of actions make sense. you may even relate. any opinions on Interstellar? Ender's Game? any other commander-y feel movies? I'm loving this stuff. I'd never thought I'd see something marketed so specifically at someone like me on the big screen. EDIT: so post viewing I'd like to make a mod of this. several things this implies. races. I don't know how to make PA handle that but it's time to start studying. primarily a lot of models, ships of all sorts, no need for land models to begin with that can come later down the line. a complete rework of the space/orbital mechanics. now that in my opinion, is the toughest one. basically the looping, 2D layer of PA space would have to be reworked entirely. so that it can be a pathable place. (3D would be tops) what type of combat and space navigation style am I looking for? maybe something along the lines of homeworld. I think it would fit quite nicely. For anybody who's played it I'm sure you see what I mean. SO. how are this things accomplishable? how accomplishable are they? who wants to help? and on what? who has any ideas pertaining to changing the aim or ambitions of this mod?
I didn't really like it (bleh, child actors, fairly boring space combat) but each to his own, since I loved Interstellar.
I despised the end. Ruined it for me; I don't like unnecessarily happy endings, but that's just me. Otherwise, the movie was awesome! I enjoyed it and his methods sure we're interesting.
I hate unnecessarily happy endings too! this ending isn't so happy though. I mean common it ended on a genocide not to mention a treacherous manipulation. near-extinction survival from that is really rather reasonable, the thing that makes it even less of a happy ending is that we see here the potential for a change of heart and the making of a new villain. (and now we could totally see his point of view too! It wouldn't just be empty-headed reasonless villainy) He could turn this into a fuel of hate towards humanity in general, and be as equally good a commander but for the opposing side. I know this is just fantasising but under this light don't you see it as far less happy? (BTW alot of the way I see this comes from SupCom's lore. If you didn't know, even though in supcom there are 4 races, their really is only 2 species (part of the reason I find SC lore holds up so well). The aliens and the humans. The humans are welded together by war. very dictatorial-like. But this breaks up when they eradicate and alien race. A new (originally) peace-loving faction comes to rise, they were fascinated with the alien race, their ways and beliefs. They now seek to spread these beliefs through the entire galaxy but of course they end up at war with the original human faction. then comes another race seeking independence because of their radical beliefs that machines are people too. They start up their own faction, and of course end up at war as well. Finally the alien race comes back as a rare few managed to survive. And they're angry, they wanna kick everyone's a ss. See how similar it is?)
The ending of Ender's Game was not a happy one - he went off in an exile from humanity. Eventually, he was accused of genocide (who knew) and hunted down for his crimes. Definitely not a happy ending, pal. Regardless, the premise of the movie, while far fetched to some degree, is quite sound when compared to the result that occurred. It's actually believable, see. The book is a great read if you haven't already done so, Tatsu. Regardless, I'm not sure what you mean - a mod? There is no ground combat - it's all about 3D tactics and strategy.
Better than the movie as -inevitably - dumbs down some things. The ending is hardly a happy ending. It's far more a tiny glimmer of light in an otherwise extremely dark story. Not in the least because Ender just made a species near-extinct. The book makes it even clearer that it was a completely unnecessary war, as the Formex (Buggers) have a different society and method of interaction, and were simply unaware that the humans were intelligent.
The movie presented it in a hopeful light. I would've preferred the movie have omitted it all together. I think it would've been a better ending if they just left it as the destruction of the planet; there's still room for their survival in other solar systems (since they are space-faring), but that's up to the imagination. Edit: the ending was a tad too far-fetched in my opinion. Either way, I didn't direct it but it was very cool. Maybe one day I'll read the book. I heard that it was pretty accurate to the book, so it might very well be worth-while.
What was far fetched about the ending? The strategy and tactics were both sound, and the reasons for why their fleet was so small upon reaching the Formic home system are clearly stated (at least, they are in the book, the movie kind of assumes you can put two and three together )
for starters i'll leave ground units as-are. but using my talents in drawing and aesthetics I can design and model units so that ground warfare is in line with the space warfare going on. you have to imagine that those big ships are not only carrying hundreds of space fighters but also hundreds of ground troops.
You'd be better off with a Homeworld mod than PA. No matter what you do space combat in PA is terribad. Or just play Homeworld. Or Sins of a Solar Empire. I don't see why you need to go to the trouble of making some mod with models that look distantly like they do in a movie that is somewhat based off of a book. For the record I didn't like Ender's Game the movie at all. Too many cut corners that could have been fixed, too many points that weren't illustrated, too much that didn't make it at all. The book had a whole (very interesting) side-plot with Ender's siblings and had the events take place over a span of years (The first scene takes place when Ender is in kindergarten in the book...). The fight scene with Bonso is done quite poorly in the movie as well IMO. Some things aren't well explained and the movie doesn't alleviate to the fact that there's a bunch of stuff going on that isn't shown. It just comes off to me as a very lazy job of adapting an excellent book to a movie.
The book was incredible. I liked the movie too, but it would have been better as two or even three movies covering the one book.
I don't think that the narrative would be compelling enough in movie form if it was stretched out into two movies. Ender's Game wasn't written in a way that translates well into two movies IMO. If it was a somewhat longer movie than is standard it might have been interesting. BTW Speaker for the Dead is even better than Ender's Game. If you haven't read it, read it. Don't read Xenocide or Children of the mind though.
no homeworld doesn't feture the things I like in an RTS engine. threading point light point shadow 3D FX 64bit some other graphic techs planets & land warfare support for 1000+ units simulated projectiles.
It's not really right to judge a Ender's Game (movie/book) by the author's opinions but the guy is an arsehole and I don't want to give him royalties.
The movie was terribad. I read the book first, then was told how bad the movie would be, so I had low expectations going in. It still managed to surpass my expectations of badness. It's like they picked out a few bits they liked, filmed them word for word from the book (book dialog almost never sounds good verbatim in a film), then mashed them together ignoring the fact that their impact comes from the lead up and expansion of the characters and situations in between those points. They also simplify and dumb down some things, and changed some fairly key points from the book. The book is just leagues better in every way. Though I agree completely with @Geers, as I found out about the author after seeing the movie. Having said that, the CGI space battles in the movie were great. But I think Nexus: The Jupiter incident would be a better platform for such a mod though. It worked great for Battlestar Galactica:
Nexus was such a good game! I saw it on sale recently and almost got it just for the nostalgia. Now that I see this mod I wish I had picked that up on steam.
