If they want to see a real fanboy they should go to a Call of Duty video on youtube and say it's a terrible game and give legitimate reasons...

Oh man does it get hectic.

Those people in real life are absolute wimps, by the way. I had the unfortunate opportunity to meet a few.

But they just need someone to hold their hand. :)

I had this argument with neutrino many times on the forum during the alpha, and that's partly what made me "hate" Uber vision.

The answer was always "We do online stuff for years at Uber, we know what we are doing, our servers will be awesome, cheap to maintain and able to handle the game because reasons I can't tell".

For a game like Dota 2, where you have an incredibly low CPU overhead (literally run 10+ games on a single core), yea online servers are no problem. But for something like this where the main selling point is "lets crank the CPU to 9000", it just doesn't make sense to try to limit everyone.

My question to you is why the **** does it matter? There are many games out there that could quite easily allow much higher unit counts, but they do not, can you even guess why? I will give you a hint, its not because of performance.

I never agreed with him on that. Though since we now can run out own servers I don't really care as long as they put some more work into optimization. Or get intel to finally start making big jumps again.

Technically the Dawn of War and Company of Heroes series have that kind of limitation, but that's mainly gameplay-design. I'm not sure what the sim limit is on those games :p

Also, threads like this are funny. "the game doesn't support 20,000 units". It does. Just because that generally isn't possible due to hardware performance, doesn't mean that the game doesn't support it.

If we're going to make a thread based on deliberately misinterpretation of English, don't be surprised when people tear those misrepresentations down ;)

I'd say it's lack of evolution, but it is very subjective. :p

Whilst I agree with you on the principal that "more isn't automatically better" I'm not convinced about the fact that there are many other engines that truly can cope with the numbers we are talking about.

Admittedly things like the 'total war' series give the 'illusion' of large numbers of units by grouping them into nice big squads (which basically turns 100 units into 1 from a sim point of view), however what we have in the TA / SupCom / PA range is unusual in terms of the number of *fully realised, animated and independent* objects that can be on screen at once. It is true that some of this is down to the type of strategy other games are going for (which are better suited to smaller groups / number) however there is a fine line between "because it's our artistic vision" and "we've fit out vision around the technology on offer".

I think what Uber are shooting for with PA is in the first box, and we're hitting performance issues as the vision is a little more ambitious than the tech at this point (though it is improving).

Well you said legitimate reason and yet you cant give one... Feelings about a genre or style of game does not make it a bad game. CoD is a very successful game, and even though im not a big fan of the FPS genre, i would rather play CoD than battlefield purely due to the amount of time it takes to get into the action. I am not someone who has the patience for such a thing. If i wanted a game that requires patience, i would play PA or similar.

How does this have anything to do with what i said? Just because PA can allow games with more than a couple hundred units does not mean they have to design games around fulfilling that concept. From what i have seen from the concept of HR, the 'mass units' style of PA just would not fit it. I am far more expectant of a unit count per player closer to SC2 than PA.

Ah sorry, misread what you were saying. Yeah in the case of HR, the PA engine is already capable of supporting more units than is needed.... The OP is more talking about the capabilities of PA though (i.e. the fact that you can't *practically* play a game with 20k units in it right now)...

Which makes the explanation of "HR won't have offline, because performance" just all the more "WTFBBQ"-like.

Well the thing about it is that PA does indeed support that kind of unit count, the problem is that it just is not 'playable' at that size. So even though i agree that it is wrong of them to say it, they are still technically correct.

Yeah, Uber, stop, please just stop. You should know your own game better than those who play it.

Uber, we love you every day of the week, except the one where you lie to our faces.
