Just finished my first GW game with offline play. Thought I would share the experience as a list of points: 1) No server lag - which means no UI lag (at all, as far as I remember). I had issues with the UI not being as quick as I was. Having to take multiple tries at placing buildings etc. No such issues now. 2) Hundreds of units without FPS drop off. 3) Zooming and navigating the maps was so smooth and easy. 4) Had an issue with teleporters not linking together. Had to wait 3 or 4 mins before they finally linked up. Might not be connected with offline play. 5) Actually finished the battle I was on before offline play. Previously the server dropped me right at the end game several times. Been trying to finish this map for about 10 battles, all of with failed due to one issue or another, like FPS slow down or server drop. I realised that the AI actually did cool stuff on this map. Built a base and consolidated forces before trying to conquer another planet. I never got that far before due to the mentioned issues. 6) Had a really good game experience. I didn't notice any of the problems that have really annoyed me before. I could go into loads of detail but you get the idea. Well done Uber. I am happy again. Well worth the wait. By the way, my system is: Phenom II 965 (quad) BE @~3.4GHz 8 Gig Ram @ ludicrous speed Win7 x64 Ultimate One thing I noticed though. When downloading the update, it failed near the end. Could not unpack something. Had to try about 4 times to get it to finish. Possibly my internet? All in all I am very pleased. This is why I backed the project in the first place. I read the kickstarted page a few days after it was announced and saw offline play, massive armies, galactic war, skermish. That was enough to lay down my hard earned. Uber has delivered and in my opinion has now realised their vision as they put it. 10/10.
Unfortunatally not enough for me. I've done plenty of tests with the offline, even to where I disabled my internet connection to see if it would still work. It did, and the single player actually played 100% better than when I was connected to the play fab thing. Now they just have to implement the rest of the core kickstarter features and I'll be happy.
yes, sorry, I dont always explain myself very well. I should have just said offline server is way better than online server. With no online server lag issues because no online server. One other observation I have made is about the zoom and navigation on the GW map. I think it is not that easy or intuitive to navigate. One has to zoom out on the oppersite side to the side you want to expand the view of. Have a go with zooming and panning and tell me if you see what I mean. Maybe this is something people are used to but I find in counter intuitive. Here is what I suggest for the action of zooming on the GW map: The fully zoomed out view should always be a view that encompasses the whole system of stars. Getting to the fully zoomed out view should be a simple case of scrolling out as far as you can. With the view auto centering on the centre of the map. With no bias due to the position of the mouse cursor. Zooming in on an area should incrementally recentre the view on the point of the mouse cursor, and zoom in. For an example of this: Say I am zoomed in on the far left portion of the map, near the bottom. I want to zoom out to see the full extent of the map. I should be able to just use the scroll wheel on my mouse and the view zooms out and recentres on the middle of the map, ignoring the mouse cursor position. Until I am at max zoom out range. Now I want to zoom in on a section on the right. I move the mouse cursor to the area and use the scroll wheel. The map incrementally centres and zooms at the point of the mouse cursor. To me, this action I have suggested is both simple and intuitive. I cant think of a reason that the map does not function like this. If I am missing some navigational point then let me know. Otherwise can anyone else see my point? Its one of the few gripes I still have with the game. I have to agree with this. There are some things in the original kickstarter feature list that need implementing/finishing. Plus the unit cannon, which I dont remember seeing as a promised feature. But, after seeing it in action on the first video teaser I would love to see in the game. Still pleased with the game and very much enjoying it. Thanks Uber. p.s. how do I quote a line from another post and have it show where it came from like I see in other posts?
My experiecne is mixed. I never had an issue with my internet connection, so offline never was a relevance for me. My computer does fullfill the recomendedd specs and that does work out for small to medium battles. But once we get into multi-planet stalemates my Sim Speed starts dropping. For me the Uber servers are actually better then running a local server. At least until dedicated LAN/GW servers come around (at wich point my 4 GiB RAM Laptop can earn it's keep by playing server). Regarding 4: Maybe you lacked power? Vanilla Teleporters need 1k Power each.
