I don't believe there's such a thing as "far too complex". At least not for a century or so more. PA is far below my cognitive ability to process information -- though, to be sure, I realize that there are plenty of people for whom it is overwhelming. So yes, increasing complexity will lead to diminishing players, past a certain point. In fact it already has -- just look at the success of StarCraft compared to SupCom. But Uber should push on as far as they economically can.

As for HR having more "gameplay" freedom than PA... I think that's only true if you consider novelty as freedom. Sure, it can do things that PA can't, but PA can do A LOT MORE things that HR can't, which is what it means for a game to be more complex than another. Just like it happened with Colonization and Civilization. Colonization was an extremely playable and enjoyable game for a month or so, but once the novelty wore off, what do you think the players did? They all went back to Civilization, because it was the more complex. And that's what will happen with HR if it manages to get made. So the more complex game will always be the better investment in the long term, both on the part of the players, and the developers. The short term is another story of course.

I mean, they can go to an entirely different art style and gameplay if they aren't "blocked" by PA's gameplay (spherical planets, massive scale, streaming eco based on metal & energy, etc.). For me, HR is a completely different RTS than PA with new ideas that may not fit well in PA (universe/gameplay/art style). Plus, diversity is awesome. :)

Working on something different can be good. Once PA has been out in the wild for a bit longer, like a year, that would be the time to launch a PA expansion. Give it its forged alliance or core contingency as it were. (which would also count as a new game, and get new reviews).

From my memory FA was released only 8 or so month after SupCom vanilla though.
Makes one realize just how much of an improvement can be made in less than a year.

I believe it was a 12 month dev cycle. Can't recall when we started it though.

Just to toss this out there, I was just helping out back then. Been good friends with these guys for a long time :) This is the first time I am officially working at Uber (though back then I was hanging out in the office drinking their dr. peppers :p )
