The game DID work when it was still in beta. Yet when I updated to the release version - nothing. just hangs.
I installed the windows version today under windows 7 - this doesn't work either.

Very annoying. linux startup attached and dxdiag for windows.

Note...i am NOT nor will be using steam.

    Problem:
previous beta worked fine. removed, downloaded latest linux version 71729
    unpacked. chmod everything 755.

game frame starts, then hangs. waited 20 mins, no joy. see transcript below

For Windows you will want to update your drivers. They are quite ancient:
For Linux, do you use the proprietary (fglrx) or the open-source (radeon) drivers? You might want to try starting PA with the --software-ui flag.

Ah, don't get them from there. Laptop manufacturers are notorious from having outdated drivers. Get them from AMD directly instead. You may even want to try the beta drivers from there. I've seen reports of people having trouble with the current stable drivers from AMD, which were fixed by going to the beta drivers.

Just want to bring your attention to fact that once game work on Windows you'll get crashes 32-bit OS memory limitations:
For more information and workaround check this topic:
    http://steamcommunity.com/app/233250/discussions/2/648816742979172000/

For Linux you also need to get most recent AMD drivers from their website: generate distro-specific package and then install them. Or if you using open source drivers please post more information about what driver you using.

ah ok, will download 14-4-win7-win8-win8.1-32-dd-ccc-whql.exe from that link and retry under windows.

as for linux, I am using the amd drivers supplied in fglrx-14.10.1006

I reran using your suggested flag, but it made no difference.

    windows update:

    on latest AMD graphics driver.

no change to problem - pa launcher sits in the background, doing nothing but using 21% cpu and 150mb mem

This game USED to work using the old drivers. I do not think it is anything to do with the graphics drivers. something has changed in the packaging of the game perhaps?

Flag only needed if game works, but actually 64-bit OS needed because 3GB of RAM isn't enough for this game anyway.

Not totally sure, but possible you need to try 14.6 Beta or newer (if there is one newer)

So you not running game, but launcher? Correct?
Also can you clarify did you successfully used new launcher before?

Basically mostly every problem with game related to old drivers. Unfortunately before AMD have really poor OpenGL support on Windows and it's improving now while FGLRX is just pack of bugs.

That was for Linux though, which has to be 64-bit, since there is not 32-bit Linux client (fortunately :)).

correct, on 64bit Ububtu 14.04 running MATE

let's dump the windows option. My goal was to only run it under Linux (and it used to) , I do not want to switch to windows.

I'll look for the latest GPU driver for linux, and see if that makes any difference

I'm on Linux Mint 17 Qianna and those instructions basically worked for me, however I had to open Synaptic Package Manager, search fglrx, mark all fglrx* for complete removal, once those were all removed I think I rebooted? but then my path diverged a bit (maybe... I had been trying a lot beforehand)

See, I had run ./amd-driver-installer-14.20-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/trusty before, followed by sudo dpkg -i fglrx* but somehow it didn't get the job done. This time through though I just run the amd-driver-installer-14.20-x86.x86_64.run file with --force and followed the prompts to install it (rebooted? maybe). Afterward my Driver Manager showed all my rpior choices greyed out (xserver... & fglrx & fglrx-updates) and the selected option reads Continue using a manually installed driver. But now my game works (with --software-ui) except that after winning a game it stops rendering everything, but I can alt+f4 and restart it to pick back up :)

Thanks to everyone posting in these threads. Hopefully my experience helps someone else.

I have that too when using --software-ui. You don't need to Alt+F4 though. Resizing the window is enough to repaint the screen. Or in case you are using full screen, just Alt+Enter twice to switch to windowed mode and back.
