Sigh, and here i thought it was a unique issue to me after having moved to china and gotten a laptop with win8. Why cant Uber just provide us with a .zip of the latest patch for us to manually extract in the game folder? I mean we literally cant even start the game we paid for, isnt that cause enough for some helpful action to be taken by them? Temporary fix or not, do something!
This just sounds to much like a windows right issue. Those happen from time to time, but such a focussed amount is unlikely. Propably the rights on the PA folder got damaged. Or maybe you forgot to run the launcher as administrator? Deleting the folder and letting the installer create it from scratch should help. I make it a habit to never put games into the programm files, as those always need adminsitrator rights for writing and have rights issues left and right. A specialised game folders with simple "everyone can read and write" right set means I avoid about 95% of all problems with games.
Maybe the can't rename issue, but the issue I'm having is with the downloaded file coming down corrupt - as someone mentioned, there's a date prepended to one of the .tgz files. Perhaps a simpler rsync-based update client option? Good suggestion on the separate games dir, and it may well be the antidote to nonsense "solutions" such as "run as admin" and "disable UAC" that come out and should never be required. I have my games dir on a separate drive with full permissions to authenticated users inherited throughout.
I am just getting cant unpack package. Looks like is downloads all but last package. Then tries to decompress and fails. I always run as admin. I use the admin account. I wonder if it is trying to decompress the package that was not downloaded. I opened a ticket as this seems to be happening on more than a few accounts.
The can't rename issue is particularly tied to the GO launcher which is an alternative launcher. My PA launcher is always ran as admin and it isn't in program files so permissions shouldn't be an issue. The game was working fine for the previous patch. At least the steam version works but oh wait, I can't even convert it because it doesn't show for me.
I have seen right issues in the user profile folder once. That is the place where there should really, never be an issue. We Programmers absolutely rely on having write rights there, because it is the only place we can even asume a place to store stuff. I am going reinstall the PTE to take a deeper look to understand where the PA-launcher is writing too. Maybe I notice something that can shed light on the issues. At the very least I will be able to confirm if the download files are valid
I just reinstallted te PTE and there is nothing where the updater could have done something wrong. If they had made any mistake it would go wrong everytime for everyone. It did not go wrong for me right now, so they very likely did not do anything wrong. I can write the basic functionality of something like this in 5 hours. And they just reused the games UI, so that is propably how much time they needed for it too. Update/installation is a simple process: 1. Download files to \Planetary Annihilation Launcher\cache 2. Extract/decompress the files directly into \Planetary Annihilation Launcher\cache, with a unique random hash value as temporary name. 3. Rename* files from \Planetary Annihilation Launcher\cache\[unique temporary] hash name to \Planetary Annihilation Launcher\Planetary Annihilation\[build]\[proper sub path and filename], creating directories as nessesary. 4. the chache is deleted completely 5. Game can be started or verrified again *Same as move in this case, as we talk about guaranteed same HDD. A move on the same disk is just a rename/reassign wich folder they belong to. It has no effect on the content of the file and needs next to nothing being written on the disk. Nothing is left lying around. Nothing is accessed outside of the launchers own folder. The game starts without a hitch. The only thing even remotely odd I found about it is that there is no automatic download start. But jsut combining the repair and download functions into the verrify button makes a lot sense. Even the one odditiy is fully acceptable decision.
Delete the "UberLauncher.exe_old" File to give the Launcher a chance to install a new "UberLauncher.exe_old" File. It cant rename the file because the file already exist! So annihilate the file Start the Launcher again an no rename-error occurs. Then it update the launcher. After the update it can be the launcher crash again and wont work. Start the launcher again and you can play. I had also the problem that it crashed by updating files. I think the problem was the old launcher version that didnt work with the new file updates
