I was playing Galactic War, and because of another issue (can't click anything) I quit with just command-Q and the game quit (as expected) with no message. I went back and everything was gone! I spent an hour getting things built, and now its all gone. I didn't get any notification this would happen- the game just exited. I'm thoroughly upset- I spent an hour and didn't even get to combat, and now its all gone. The game should have saved my progress so that I could come back where I was. I'm hoping this thread will at least alert others to this problem. Should I contact support too?
There's no save mid-game feature yet, unfortunately It will come, but it's either finish a game or don't currently.
Which I understand. I wish at least there would be a giant warning on the key combo to quit or the quit button.
Well i have played Galactic war, and saved my games at the end of a round, and twice now i come back to the game a day later or a few hours later the first time and POOF my saved game is gone under Active wars.. Now i have to start all over...again, for a 3rd time.. So the save feature doesn't even appear to be working right.. Frustrating
That's really odd. I haven't seen anything like that before on the forum. All the save games and settings are stored in: Windows: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Uber Entertainment\Planetary Annihilation\localstore (On a typical install %LOCALAPPDATA% will be C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local) OSX: ~/Library/Application Support/Uber Entertainment/Planetary Annihilation/localstore Linux: ~/.local/Uber Entertainment/Planetary Annihilation/localstore Could it be that that directory is read-only or you are out of disk space there or something? Do your settings also disappear when you lose your save games? Can you upload your logs here to see if there is any error in them? You can find those in the same directories as above, but instead of localstorage, go to log.
Will check out the directory, plenty of space on my drive, 798Gig free out of 931Gig (1T drive), settings remained i had set for video, it was only the games that were gone. I have started a new game and just saved it, will play another planet, save and then quit the game to see if anything happens. What file specifically holds the saved game data?
If you are actively engaged in combat, there is no Save function and quitting will make you lose the whole War. We are still working to get a Save feature added. Only when you've defeated an enemy Commander and you're taken back to the Galactic War field is when you are able to "save" that War for another turn. - I know, it's confusing and frustrating We're still working on it.
I think that's not what he meant though: So he does have save games, but upon quitting PA they disappear.
My guess would be in "Uber Entertainment/Planetary Annihilation/localstore/IndexedDB/coui_ui_0.indexeddb.leveldb", but they are binary files and a quick look with a hexeditor doesn't reveal much. However, they did change when I started a new Galactic War campaign.
Correct, I have won a planet and am back at the main planetary menu to change planets / explorer and i use the Save option and that is when i have come back and the game was gone. I just played another planet and am going to do a full reboot now on my laptop see if anything happens. I did do a save and quit steam and came back in and the game was there. I am sure now it won't happen again likely, go figure! But i guess it is good news then.
Quitting with alt-tab and killing the PA.exe in task manager won't have any effect on GW campaign. Next time it will load on the screen where you last click FIGHT.
Heh, reading is hard. His save games are gone after having saved them. By the way, you don't need to kill PA.exe in the task manager, you can simply quit PA from within PA itself using the <Esc> menu.
Well an update. it is as mkrater said "quitting will make you lose the whole War." I have saved from the last planet last night, came back, played a new planet, but was getting my butt handed to me, so i did quit the game, to which you do get the warning the Galactic War you're in will be all gone! When i did this, i had "assumed" it would just be gone the planet / progress you were just playing, not erase ALL of your saved history of what you played. So that is what it does it seems. i can ply win save, as soon as i quit mid game , it erases all of your progress, instead of just the planet you were playing. Not sure why they would do this? Sometimes people have to quit a game mid way due to real life calling so to erase ALL of your progress of that war seems silly and an easy way to not make people want to play through it.... This can not be that hard to fix i would think, clearly the game can save so why not remove the code that says "if a game is quit / not finished erase ALL progress" MUAHAHAHAHHA evil end users!
I have not tried myself, but based on my general understanding of the game's UI tech and some other posts I've seen a workaround is to quite the game via ALT-F4
This is what I do as well intentionally. It pleases me to do so. Are you saying the above via cola_colin doesn't work anymore? Because if so, I will be copy-pasting local cache files But thanks for the heads up before it happened accidentally?
You can also use the UI debugger to copy paste only the galactic war save. I forget the key, but I saw it in there for sure.
Good to know for the temp fixes, will def be using them and hope this gets fixed ASAP. I am loving the game so far, the little quirks like the random lag and stuff can be weird at times, but tolerable for now.
Idk, I KNOW I lost a commander in orbit (was yoloing and figured he was the only mobile AA I had to land with), and know I alt f4 and it's still there in Release. Havent tested current PTE.
@garat this is coming up a lot with new players, I know mid game save isn't something that can be added quickly but perhaps a 'training mode' that allows you to continue a GW after a loss would be a good idea? It should listed differently under 'completed wars' with 'training mode' banner across it (as I know you guys want the default mode to be no continue). That way people can practice without the fear of loosing everything, then play a 'full' GW game without the safety net when they've got to grips with the game?
I guess i am curious as to why it can save your progress if you won a planet, but not save it if you quit mid game? Clearly your game is saved prior to the new game starting, thus why would they delete it once you start a new game...
