When planets with Halley crashed they're not wiped from memory, but become invisible while remain fully loaded into RAM. This is required to make ChronoCam work properly when you revert state of game when planet's not yet crashed and same for planets destroyed using Catalyst.

PS: Also according to my tests memory usage for planet decreased from 4860MB to 4316MB which is really a lot.

That actually explains a lot, I never realised the planets were still there. It explains the difficulty with the invisible death dome. But surely they could have made a marker in the chronocam saying planetDeath at 5 mins or something?
Obviously it isn't that simple though :(

Not sure if get you right, but why exactly you need those markers? Obviously developers need implement markers first.

No, we don't need the markers. Just my thinking is it could sort out the death dome bug.

I don't know, varrak. On that livestream I only saw whiskey and some piss in a shiny can. You guys must be keeping the beer someplace else.

    @varrak

After the patch here are the results on my low end, barely supported system:

Lowest graphical settings, Pax system Me vs 1 Absurd AI@ 2x econmy boost
I loaded in only 2 minutes after automatic start (so about 4 minutes after the game was initialised ~ 5 minutes loading time). I must say that is great. A similar system would have before taken me about 7-10 minutes to load up. I can't wait till the texture quality settings go in.

I can't wait for them for the exact opposite reason :p MAX all the settings!

It's worth noting that the code changes *did not* make it into that patch. There was not enough time to fully test them before submitting them - so it'll continue to get better.

Today, I am going to be creating a tool to supplement UberProbe (our performance tool), to dump the entire heap (that's the allocated memory an application uses) giving data on exactly what is allocated, and when. This will give us a really detailed picture of where memory is going. From that, we'll be able to fine tune our efforts and really start slamming down our memory footprint.

    Well, that's the hope, anyway.

Good. Because when I get my new computer in December, I swear I'm going to make PA wish it never raped my current computer so hard. Full recreation of our solar system is coming.

You'll need a solid 128GB of DDR4. :) then you can create the whole solar system to scale. In kilometers

Well it's not going to be 1:1 scale, since the upper limit is 1300 m for planets. But I will go and try to make it in some scale.

The biggest non gas giant planet in our solar syste is Earth with 6400 km radius, so I guess the system is going to be 6400:1300 (64:13 or about 5:1 ratio).

Wow so it's mean even more memory usage improvements? Great!

@varrak This is amazing stuff, thanks for the update!
I've been liberally spreading this around the Steam discussion boards to all the people claiming the devs will abandon the game after launch. It makes me a sad panda :( But don't give up, and don't listen to the naysayers, all the work will be worth it!

This tool ought to help find out why my games aren't playable from my end by finding out where and why that memory is not generating the planets

    Or did I misinterpret that?

At this rate PA will be running on a TI-84 calculator before the steam holiday sale. On lowest settings, of course.
