There actually is for galactic war... that is- in between attacks. But I understand what you mean, I just like to mess with people.
I don't get why people are hating on the concept of Galactic War (the implementation critique is subjective). I REALLY like the rogue-like premise, so taking that and putting into an RTS seems quite unique to me. People keep moaning about how you can get stuck with no hope of winning, but that's kind of the point. Do the same people moan about how in FTL you can barely get to the end most playthroughs?, Let alone win the damn thing. I know galactic war is a lot longer than a game of FTL, but I still don't see the problem. IMHO
For all that want a save function in GW: You only can't save your last game, progress is saved when regular quitting the campaign. If you need to abandon game while the battle is on, or you are overwhelmed and your Commander is low on health, just alt-tab and kill the PA.exe in task manager, then this won't have any effect on GW campaign. Next time it will load on the screen where you last click FIGHT.
It did remind me of a Roguelike too. All the basic concepts are there: Random tech. Permadeath. Semi-random enemies/systems. Even the movement is reminding me of FTL a lot. Granted unlike most roguelikes you can just close the client and try the mission again, being back on a "clean slate". So it is not quite as bad. But still my win/loss-rate speaks for itself:
Yes it is a rouge like, but do you really want to play a rouge like, where a bad spawn or an unlucky combination of techs can destroy irrevocable hours and hours of progress? Also I don't mind economy boosts for the AI, but the multiple commanders at higher difficulty are really unfair when you are fighting at a technology and economic multiplier difference. I wouldn't mind them if the planet was big enough for all of us, but spawning on 5 mex and then getting boxed in because all the expansions are enemy spawn points really isn't fun as it doesn't even leave you a chance of victory.
I don't mind the rouge like if it doesn't represent too much of an investment, otherwise it just becomes annoying. GW at this time represents an investment of 20 hours minimum. Loosing that kind of progress because you got unlucky is, well, bullshit.
Or you can just quit from the menu, just DON'T click abandon war... Took me a a few lost campaigns to notice that it wasn't just a quit function
The good old "close programm" order Alt+F4 (for windows) works too. Not sure about Mac and Linux. Just do it before your commander goes boom.
Or the dev's could just give you the option to keep playing anyway. Make "rogue-like" an option for the uber and hard categories. Loosing all of your progress sucks.
Guys. If you are a big war machine and you get blown up, GUESS WHAT? YOU CAN'T FIGHT ANYMORE. YA KNOW. CUZ YOU'RE DEAD. The only reason you're allowed to start over is because its a game.
FTL games usually take less time in their own nature, encounters take 2 minutes and the whole game beginning to end takes 40 minutes to an hour. Besides that, it isn't much different than FTL. Because of the amount of time though, I do opt to alt-f4 usually. Then again, if I were playing smaller system and easier AI, I would roguelike. I did roguelike at very beginning, youtube vids to prove it, got pretty far. Absurd GW usually proves a challenge even alt-f4 retrying, the retries are pretty exhausting to get a good run against bad odds, I have seen some pretty amazing GW games doing it, I would recommend it if you are good at playing but still have trouble with absurd AI.
