    Prologue: The Humanity of Machines

Commander Zech was a Raptor Centurion Commander that was constructed out of whim when a resource-rich system was converted into one that, unlike most, did not send troops and stage attacks, but rather produced Command units to further influence the war. He was created with several flaws, very quickly, because of an enemy faction approaching an uninhabited system adjacent to a key star. It was expected that they would attack and take the star's gas giants, after taking control of the system and utilizing it as a staging area, and later, defense.

After Zech won, he was to be dismantled, however, more reinforcements, from another faction that saw the strategic value and the faction that made the original attempts began sending orbital enforcements. Zech, being built out of haste, was left with the resources he had to work with, and had several flaws.

Within each Commander, there were two processors that every faction used, and no commanders knew about. The first was a link that emitted an invisible connection to a conglomeration of the faction, which usually implanted newer stratagems and basic updates into his mind. The second, was one that simply prevented free will.

People misunderstand the danger of free will. There is always the risk, that yes, one Commander might betray his faction and join another, and this was prevented with this module, however, the primary concern put in place by its designers was, one, that Commanders would realize that there was either no point to the war, or that the war could not be won.

In the case of Zech, he lacked the latter, and therefore, as his existence advanced, began to contemplate the reasons of his presence in the universe. It was not that the war could not be won, he was confident it could, as he had an optimist personality, but that there would be no point. Other Commanders, such as several Quad Osirises that were discovered shut down and implemented into the faction, were drones; they would complete each task without question. Zech did so always, until he slipped, and was on the verge of losing a battle. In his panic, he constructed a teleporter network that led him to an uninhabited system. This is where he stood now.

Zech's reactor was at an approximate twenty percent, but internal damage was spawning more problems, and unfortunately, he lost around three percent an hour. This could have been easily corrected, however, all of his resources and storage were lost, and his own damaged before he escaped. He stood there, hopelessly, waiting. And when one is bored and unoccupied, particularly if they are waiting for their death, what they do?

    They think.

And Zech did just that. He panned his view towards the stars, and back towards the west horizon. He began considering creating a reactor, then a storage, but his inefficient economy and system damage would render him dead before he could establish a simple economy and enlist the aid of a fabricator to heal his wounds.

Zech was done for, according to his own calculations. So he thought. He thought, as he must.

“No point.” “No point.” “No point.” “No point.”

The lacking module was allowing him to roll over the impossible, as most commanders found it impossible to contemplate. Had he spoke his thoughts to another commander, depending on the system in their head, they would have either heard static or simply not understood his meaning.

Zech considered the complete annihilation of all the enemy factions. What would his faction do? Build? Why? What would be the point?

“No point.” “No point.” “No point.”

The radiant explosion of his reactor occurred when he still had eight percent left. It shined on the astreus sent from the conglomeration, carrying an advanced fabricator that was to repair him.

    Commander Zech could have fought.

But he didn't want to be saved.

    So he ended it.

    Chapter I: The World Beyond

At the initial time when intergalactic travel was developed by the Legonis Machina, it was still unknown what was at the center of a galaxy. Electronics began to behave weirdly there, and for this reason it was avoided. The thoughts of a “universal portal” at the center of black holes did not die, but was rather ignored, as without the use of technology it was impossible to approach them.

After the Legonis Machina developed these technologies, the Revenants were the first to attempt duplicating it, however The Foundation were the second to successfully produce a means of interstellar travel. This lead to small colonization conflicts throughout other galaxies, but the leaders of all factions knew that the priority was to maintain healthy diplomatic relations with the other factions. The last thing every faction wanted was war.

However, it was inevitable. Each faction hosted conferences that laid out rules for colonization and exploration, but when the Legonis Machina proposed a plan, it was found unfair by the Foundation, when the Foundation proposed a plan, it was found, most agreeable with Synchronous, due to their similar religious perspectives, but the Revenants and Machina found them unfair. They eventually resolved to a “you find a planet or system first, you keep it” policy, however this did not cover every dynamic, such as when there was dispute upon who discovered a system first.

Tensions grew between the factions, and they separated into three groups: The Revenants and Legonis Machina remained on their own, however, Foundation Acolytes and Synchronous Servants began developing a trust for each other economically, politically, and militarily. A political party from the foundation, which revered themselves and called themselves “Saints,” despised the (not really) infant nation of Synchronous and therefore did everything within the capability of their political influence to shoot down any diplomatic interactions with Synchronous.

It became apparent that the Legonis Machina had a slightly better system of culture and production, and they began arriving at more systems faster. They would have controlled every new faction had they not been hit by a solar storm that smashed the capital and left it in turmoil and anarchy. Relief efforts were sent by all factions to “help those poor, foolish people” but the Legonis Machina essentially lost all of its influence over the period of stagnancy that it had experienced.

The courts that determined the owners of systems were also located in the Legonis Machina Empire, and therefore, factions began using unfair and backstabbing tactics to gain control of solar systems. Apparently not condoned by the Governments, colonists would assault other colonists in the region and stage petty wars. When taken into custody of their parent faction, they were given a slap on the wrist (really a pat on the back) then returned to the solar system to control it.

Around this time, after the Legonis Machina exited its period of anarchy, the Revenants began implementing the Commander technology that was seen during the Great War to redevelop areas and solar systems that used these backstabbing tactics, and the other factions followed suit, until it was determined that the factions’ Commanders were sometimes controlled by corrupt masterminds.

Legonis Machina directly confronted the Revenants on this issue, to which the Revenants denied and did not adjust, but rather used the confrontation as a way to accuse the Legonis Machina of slander and motivate its citizens into beginning a war. Foundation and Synchronous began taking as many precautions as possible to develop an alliance and come out on top of the war, then spread God to the solar systems, but the Foundation Saints eventually came out on top of the political parties and cut all relations with Synchronous. War was already upon the factions as the gravity of the factions’ motivation assembled machines intended for destruction.

Then, the breaking point. The twig snapped, the damn broke, and hell burst through into the universe as the Revenants lead an attack on the Foundation and Legonis Machina due to their “sick tactics of gaining systems.” Foundation, however was not as guilty (albeit still guilty) of these tactics, but they still fell victim to the Revenants’ attacks. Everyone was prepared for war within three Earth years.

And what had come of Earth? All of its life was annihilated during the Great War, just to catch you up. It no longer had any resources and no faction found it necessary to recolonize it.

But now, this is a different war. Humanity had escalated into Chaos. Death hung over the galaxy, until the hostile war efforts left every human either dead from war, or dead from the lack of supplies coming to their system. Humanity was gone, and, for the last days of his life, a Commander programmer released an update that if a Commander or its forces should ever come across humans, regardless of his or her faction, not to kill.

Later, when a Commander of that type was captured, his programming latched onto that of the capturing faction, and this eventually spread the policy to all of the Commanders of all of the faction. The year is 8320 A. D., and humanity is presumed dead.

Now is the true beginning, where the warlike machines can function without the burden of their human handlers. They can dream in ways that were never even considered to be implemented by humans in warfare, and it is time for the universe to fall into the chaos and turmoil that its mechanical masters and unrelenting machines have created for it.

    Well

    That's how most stories are

but it only took one hour to write all of it, knocking these out is easy

but knocking these out while still staying ahead on 3 AP classes, that might be a different story.... So without support I will certainly not continue it

Chapter II: The Descent Into Darkness

During the first attacks that finished the last humans in existence, all factions were unorganized militarily, as they were slowly pulling themselves into a mobilizing format fit for war on a intergalactic scale. This changed, however, when the machines realized that protecting certain systems was unnecessary except when it came to strategic value, as the humans they were designed to protect were long gone. With the most limited amount of resources, Commanders could stage an army that was capable of wiping a planet. Although this would take months for a commander with crummy resources and days for one that has access to sufficient metal, it could be done regardless. This was before unheard of in war.

They realized that armies were temporary, the only way to truly annihilate the other was simple: produce more Commanders, as they were self-sufficient with their economy and could develop their own. Therefore, each faction began devoting their richest and most developed systems to producing as many Command units as possible, and loading them in astreuses to conquer the stars. Although this was deemed inefficient, as a lot of astreuses were shot down by either fighters or “Avenger Satellites” of already occupied planets, the Commanders continued using this method until the warmongering commanders eventually developed (unknown which faction) a disposable pod. This could be used to enter an atmosphere, impact a planet, and clear out trees, all with a means so efficient that it would be considered ludicrous.

At the beginning of the war, the Revenants had greatly outproduced the others' and began a systematic circular clockwise wipe of the galaxy, however, it was not as efficient as it was calculated to be. After losing nearly eighteen percent of their commanders, they resolved to simply stick to conventional war tactics- for now.

The problem with “conventional” war tactics is that they were intended to exclude the considerations of space. Humans, before their later history, had hosted the grand majority of their wars on Earth, even the Great War was the first war that touched the stars.

Commanders, having lost the databases held by the ARM and CORE commanders, had no means of utilizing these tactics and thus it became essential to develop their own. Since the initial tactics, being on the plane of infinity, were random, they quickly cut out halves of the pie chart to determine what was useful and what was not; and after a few months (all time elements being in relation to Earth) had a large database, developed either off of skirmishes, field tests, or the occasional actual engagement. War, technologies, strategies, and styles surged forward at an unbelievable rate. Every commander was, without control by a human, to follow the primary order. Although it was variable, especially during times of peace, for the last thousand years it was: “Eliminate all other factions.” For faction leaders, such as the Imperial Invictus of the Legonis Machina, this message was repeating. There was no way to stop it; and this meant that Commanders could never forget their purpose.

War, as it could be said, went swimmingly. But not even Machines can account for everything. War surged, life was decimated, an apathetic world of AIs mercilessly ramming into each other for domination that would continue, perhaps, until the universe's end.

After another millennium, each faction instated conglomerations- huge facilities that were built into what they considered their strongest planet- It would dug deep into its core and would protrude from the other side. Here were the processors of millions of Commanders, laying there, coordinating their entire empire. Since this system ran so well, they updated all of the machines to follow it- It was resource efficient, and each commander became its wireless drone, capable of being controlled from the planet. This was actually an old idea made new, as there was evidence of the CORE utilizing these methods during The Great War, however, there is no evidence that each CORE commander could not think independently. Back then, the collections of minds were for coordination and planning.

Now these giant Planet-sized brains were used to control and directly monitor everything that happened anywhere in the universe. Or so they thought.

Crucial Faction Data: This was intended to be uploaded Earlier, but it is here now.
    Factions

    The Legonis Machina

The people who chose to associate themselves with that of the Legonis Machina lead complicated, modern-day “American Lives.” They were presented with the North Western Quadrant of the Milky Way. They prided being considered like their ancestors “The Great Americans” and honored those whom graduated their universities having studied them. Their life was based off of freedom and happiness, and anyone who tried to take it from them would “take a boot in their ***.” They constructed a society out of American principles: Freedom to do anything, even the freedom to say others can't do something.

The people before “The Great War” (us) were not nearly as clean as we were perceived by the Legonis Machina. We are seen as an intellectual people with high standards and qualities of life, but our negatives were ignored. We are essentially seen as Saints.

People did everything they could think of to emulate “Americans”, and shunned people who didn't. Most anyone who proved their worth were accepted.

The Legonis Machina constructed their Government to be indirect. They elected “Idols” to be their leader, which were backed by a Congress of voting “Housemen.” Their military leaders were prided and openly admired, referred to as “Imperials.”

Boys and girls were considered adults by the age of sixteen, and were expected to work after their education that began when they were two. They used a twelve year school system that people learned standardized information. Learning Math when they wanted a career in writing, learning physics when you want to start a business. People were free to make their own choices in life, and therefore, economy boomed, and people were happy, until the storm.

    Foundation

The people of the foundation were peace loving (if the other party in question loved the opposite gender and God.) Religious fanatics. They were given the North Eastern quadrant of the Milky Way. They were born into a culture that forced them to follow the religion, and if they openly denied it, they were never seen again. No one exactly knew what happened to those who questioned.

Life was, however, simple. Government was lead by the church, and every month the religious leaders were tested for corruption and reminded of their values so as to prevent a dictatorship spawning under him (always him) and causing the chaos that would begin ancient (by our standards) regimes downfall.

“Priests” were the enforcers. In the event that someone neglected religious law, they would handle the matter. Their local Government officials were “Bishops,” and those in charge of sectors were “Cardinals.” They reported to “Papa,” or as some called him, “Pope.” They called their military leaders “Acolytes."

    Revenants

Revenants believed that control of the population was the birthplace of a civilized and united society. In this belief, they instated a Government that was a utopia. Despite being concluded logically impossible, the Revenants successfully concluded that the only way to make an advanced society was to create a Government with complete control over its citizens, and then, instead of adjusting the policies of the Government to help the citizens, they would adjust the policies of the citizens to fit the Government.

This worked because of the simple fact of propaganda that they successfully implanted in everyone's minds one core concept: everyone in the entire nation loved everyone in the entire nation.

Everyone grew up on this principle. Students were taught in schools the moral value of helping his neighbor, the love that everyone should have for their counterparts at every time. Because of this advanced set of moral and ethical values, the Revenants were the first to enter a Golden age that lasted until the war. The Revenants essentially took every instinct known to man, and excluded all of them if they did not relate to self-preservation. Competition with others: eliminated. Greed: eliminated. People were happy and healthy, despite it being an unnatural amount of health, and the Revenants saw that the ends justified the means.

    Synchronous

Synchronous was no different from a regime in ancient Earth history. Run off religion, it formed later after the other factions, splitting from the Revenants after a Christopher Sames was born, and developed a concept of “God.” “God,” as described by Sames, was a divine force that created the Humans and blessed them with what they had today. Against the Revenant Government's wishes, he would contact brilliant schemes just to visit the Foundation after he learned of their faith in God. He decided to reside there, and eventually began visiting the Legonis Machina to learn of their beliefs. He saw Legonis Machina as “an unorganized stirring pot, where no one could possibly make any progress towards discovering the truth.”

Therefore, he developed a taste in The Foundation, but had a distaste for their Government. He decided that the only way to free himself and his followers to live precisely the way that they wished was to separate. Surprisingly, the Revenant council who he spoke with for permission to secede saw no potential conflict and allowed him to take two thousand of his followers (as the Revenant population laid at about thirty billion.) Disgruntled followers who weren't permitted to leave eventually either asked permission to go as well, or escaped by their own means.

Together they created Synchronous, which, in their eyes, was a Nation comprised of all of the positive traits of every faction, where it burrowed the least from Legonis Machina.

    Chapter III: Shooting Stars

War was fought for nearly three thousand years, and well guarded technology from all sides were disappearing into oblivion, even Commanders. It seemed that when the conglomerations attempted to locate where they were, the module inside the Commander's head was not attainable through the stars and it was not reached.

This is when, to the distaste of all factions, they realized due to the setup they produced, there was a range limit that only allowed the commanders to expand so far out into the universe. This is when the combat in the war escalated to unimaginable feats. There was a point, when during any second, there was at least six thousand battles happening at the same time.

During this period, strange, unidentified asteroids and meteors began streaking through the skies of thousands of galaxies, most of them catching orbit, a few of them crashing- never to be seen again. This was seen as normal, useless celestial behavior and, from a strategic standpoint, was ignored as soon as commanders determined that their base was safe from their impacts.

None of these rocks were large enough to demolish a planet, most were sized as if one had taken four trees, cased them in rock, and ejected them to meet their fate. For this reason, with their huge amount of uselessness, they quickly became an everyday thing.

Then they started crashing, crashing and crashing, almost in sequence. The ones that had crashed already were either obliterated or inspected and found to be empty and without resources. Throughout systems and galaxies, it seemed like a wave- they would all crash- and eventually, the conglomerations decided that their best bet would be to reexamine the rocks that might have fallen, to see if, maybe they missed a molten core of pure metal.

Commander Stane, a Revenant Seeker, ordered three doxes and a tier one fabricator to investigate the disturbance, as the crash had occurred not so far from its base. Despite that it was in radar coverage, the power had, unfortunately, been affected by the landing, and was temporarily jammed.

Crotus, Magnum, Serene, and Jase arrived at the base of the impact; Crotus and Magnum crawled into the pit. Serene, being the last dox, began patrolling the circumference of the crater, and Jase waited for a report before it began reclaiming. After six minutes, nothing abnormal had been reported, and Jase started the process of converting the solid rock into dust. It provided little economic benefit, but, the purpose was what was on the inside. After another four minutes, Magnum stated the potential uselessness, seeing as they had not come across anything yet. Jase stopped for a moment to gaze, as the raw energy blocked its view.

“What's that?” Serene was the one to speak. They noticed metal.

“Report it,” commanded Crotus, “We have found resources in this one.”

Cracks spontaneously appeared, all starting at the metal and reaching as far as the other side. “Resume,” Crotus ordered.

Jase proceeded, but did not go much longer; instead, it began slowly backing off when a Progenitor Commander stood at its full height, and, without thought, gunned off the machines. This was automatically reported to Stane, and, based off of how Commanders were wired, went strait to the conglomeration.

Stane's base was, for a brief moment, in chaos despite being able to create an army out of whim, one was not already present, as the system was long captured from The Foundation. The Progenitor immediately constructed a teleporting portal and a base, pouring units in from beyond, to encase the enemy in the metal of billions of tanks.

Soon, they too encountered airstrikes, first from tier one and then from two, as the progenitor could easily transport an army, however, not an economy. Soon Stane was paralyzed, practically annihilated, left to lay for the rest of eternity.

The same scene played on every faction, and on the leading planet of every faction, and each conglomeration was crippled and left decompose. The progenitors, in this short span, had gained control of every system that was once controlled by the four factions. They were destined to fight forever, however, progenitors that emerged from the meteorites crippled everything. It was all over in hours.

Those that were not threatened were shut down as their mind in the conglomeration was melted by the planet's collapse. The Universe fell into silence. Peaceful silence. The sounds of fire, burning, and weapons no longer echoed through planets' atmosphere. But the Progenitors built. No one knew where they came from or what their purpose was, besides finishing off the factions.

Chapter IV: A Resurrection in Machines

Invicuts woke slowly, his sensors gradually becoming more aware of the environment. He tried to load simple data: All that came to him was basic economical structures, basic defense, radar (which he himself was restricted from constructing) and tanks. Ah, yes, tanks! He could still use an army. He righted himself. Something was- off. Invicuts immediately marched across the area, half-taking in the surroundings, half-thinking of how bored he was.

Then he halted. Bored. He was bored. Invictus gazed at the “hands”- one that fabricated, one that attacked, and concluded that this was a normal anatomy. He quickly settled down and created a basic economy. He stood still for hours, almost to a day, as a fabricator repaired- no- healed him.

Osirus woke with a start- and immediately raised his center tower with his four legs, slowly straightening them and lifting himself. He looked around, and only remembered the hate he had for the progenitors. Then he realized. Hate. What is this? He had never felt a passion to do battle, merely an inclination put in place by his programming. An inclination that forced him to, but, an inclination nonetheless.

Centurion's Vision came quickly, and it took him a minute to maneuver a way to stand up, as the sands of time had pushed him over. He eventually figured it out, engineering a way to regain posture that other Commanders would have considered futile. Then he realized what he had done. Stood up? Thought of a way to stand up? Any other occurrence would have had a Commander laying there- apathetic to the fact that they were on their side.

Matrarch was the only leader that still held the same position as he normally would. He began driving forward involuntarily, the vibration of his treads shaking dust and soil that had gathered on him over time- and gained vision, realizing he had produced a huge dust cloud near and behind him, to which he stopped, and began whirring around in an effort to gain better sight. Then he stopped. What am I doing, whirring around to clear away dust?

Every Commander realized the differences that occurred. They almost seemed human, impure. But no Commander realized what human was- they hadn't been conscious- some had never been conscious.

The design that every faction had implemented Conglomerations of processors that would designate and control every commander ever- each of them being an empty shell. This eventually proved to be a mistake, as expanding past the border of the Conglomeration's radio reach was near impossible. Since it was a good system, and another conglomeration was too expensive (albeit risky) to set up, they began producing machines that thought independently, the same way that they would in the metal shell of a planet. These were not one of those Commanders. These were raw; had the ability to think like a human, despite having no reason to. This gave them emotion, and even provided their troops the same characteristics that Human armies used to have. This was a new age, an age that had not been seen in an uncounted amount of years. This drove the Commanders to discover their heritage and their purpose, to eradicate the oppressors that left them here, both the other factions and the mysterious force that disabled them. Yes; they would find other command units, reinstate them, regardless of their old faction, and make them new, make them ours.

*Each story from this point on will be alternating beyond the view of each faction.
