I'm a bit confused with your math here. 8 cores at 1 core per game is equal to 8 games with, at most, 2 threads per game.

If I had an 8 planet game running, and only 1 core dedicated to that game, that's not 1 core per planet, or 1 core per player.

Do you mean that the server is an Octo-CPU machine?

Yes that's what I said? The computer has an octo-core CPU. With one core used per server.

Edit: that is the part that's really confusing me here.

So, it's an octo-CPU machine, not an octo-core CPU. It has 8 physical processing units that contain 8 processing cores?

(If I don't understand after this I'm going to get off of the internet until my brain turns on, me thinks :p)

I'm prevent the sure it's a CPU with eight cores, with one thread per planet. (That last bit about threads is what Cola said at least.)

The computer also has 16GB of RAM. That's 2GB of RAM per server and one core per server.

The only thing is that this is flexible, and servers utilize resources other servers should be using when those servers aren't being stressed.

Yea, if each server only has 1 core, then they can only have 2 threads, since HT only adds +1 thread. And I have to admit that the amount of RAM it uses is mindblowingly small.

Agreed, but that's what specs they had the last we were told! :p

A core can only be processing one thread at any given point in time, but it can be running as many threads as it wants, it will just time share them (which isn't a problem unless the core is maxed out). To quote from before:

I get it now! Threads, as the software kind! Not the firmware(?) kind that Intel's Hyper Threading is.

I seriously don't see why they don't just host a second server for the 40+ games...

You can rent servers for special purposes like this. And they will raise it back to 40 or more once the optimisation catches up to allow such games.
I can see why such extreme cases are not covered by the one-time buying of the game.
