    I'm not %100 sure but I have this vague memory that someone from Uber said that there is a lot more going on with the current smash effect. So with that, I believe the current effect is more of a "placeholder" or foundation for the desired end effect. Who knows maybe they are figuring out effects for all of the different possible planet impacts (size, biome type, kind of smash like planet's scrapping each other or full blown Halley smashes.

    But I could be completely wrong...
