Not even government institutions (like schools) get that kind of pricing!

They do here :) Also I have got some discount because I didn't change the company for a while and they increased the speeds since then so they let me have a bit lower prices (5$ or so) despite having increased speed.

Someone ought to try to rent the biggest available on demand servers they can find for a few hours and try how the server scales with 32 cores and 200GB ram or similar.

http://aws.amazon.com/ec2/pricing/ it cost 4$ and hour to have for the 32 core 256 ram server...... when this comes out shall we throw a donation party for super games??

I'd be really interested into server benchmarks to measure how well it actually scales with that many cores and that many ram. I doubt it will scale well with a lot of ram, unless you have gigantic maps that will out-of-memory most of the clients. For the cpu cores I'd hope it will scale well at least if you have i.e. lots of small planets. They should be largely independent from each other after all.

Definitely gonna want to do a lot of bench mark testing when we get access.

At only $4/hr I would be willing to sponsor a mega tourney just to watch the absurdity.

I'm thinking of like as soon as we do this eSports has to decide whether they want a server of there own or not.

4$ an hour really adds up, nearly 100$ a day. (96$)

    Which means 672$ a week, 2,688$ a month, and 32,256$ a year!

Though of course this is only if you rent this super server for a year :p

That's it's hourly for just using it for hours at a time. It's monthly is different

A 100 player giang ffa tournament xD

True though if you play for maybe 2,3 hours it is much cheaper to only use it on demand.

I don't think the price is that much of an issue. I guess that the 32 core 256gb kind of thing probably is much too powerful and you can get away with a much cheaper server that still is quite a beast.

But for playing around the biggest one obviously is the best one :D

I wonder what the benchmarks across services will be, for example google compute, vs amazon vs a digital ocean VPS vs rackspace etc etc

    Hence I said a tourney.

I doubt one would roll for over a day strait, and I'd front $100 to watch that kind of absurdity... Assuming some good players in the mix.
