Future monetisation of PA; what is acceptable and what is not?

    They can sell whatever they want to, as long as nothing they sell gives players any sort of advantage over people that have only purchased the base game.
    I have no issue with them selling skins and stuff like that on the side. It is a great way to bring in extra pure profit revenue.

    In my opinion, I would definitely pay for the following that come from Uber:

    Merchandise: physical goods, especially miniatures of the units/commanders
    Cosmetic items: new in-game commanders, unit skins, custom death animations/art
    Expansion packs: new units, planets, gameplay elements, and game types
    Game engine updates: new features, support for new or future hardware/software standards, more user customization, exposure to functions for mods
    Mod tools: map maker, unit creator, etc.

    The game engine updates and mod tools I feel should be done through kickstarter campaigns, where afterwards they are sold for a low price ($5-$10). It is not to say that the mod tools will be the only way to create mods, it will just make the process easier. I am not looking at Uber to making a 3D editor, just some tools to help with debugging, file management, and ease of creating/editing text based files. I am sure it will help them out with their business as well.

    Items that I would not pay for:
    Bug fixes
    Individual new units
    Pay-to-win items

    I am very much looking forward to the mod marketplace. It should definitely allow both pay and donation based compensation. Art and 3D tools cost quite a bit, and making 3D assets that look good, take quite a bit of time. There is a reason why PA has chosen this art style and not the look that we see in SupCom / FA (and keeping in mind that many of the artists that did SupCom/FA do work at Uber, so it is definitely not in ability or talent that they have chosen that style). If I had to guess, I would say at least 50% of a games total budget deals with just the art (from conception to delivery).

    Having individuals or small teams create new toys for us to play with and compensating them for quality work and have them continue making content is a win-win-win (Uber, mod makers, and players). The paid mods will allow for total conversion and quality units. The donation mods will allow for unique items and at least give some motivation to those who are new or inexperienced another incentive to make things in addition to the love of the game.

    I really, really hate the idea of paid mods. Mods are supposed to be labours of love. If I see a paid mod a little capitalist will crawl into my heart and kill part of it.

    I can only see two ways forward for continued PA development:

    1. Free-to-play
    2. "Big rock" features turned into paid-for expansion packs and finally a sequel

    I don't think the "mod store" will work. It's already hard to find people to play against sometimes, it's only going to get worse if people are using different mods. Uber says they'll make it all seamless, but I would still prefer to play vanilla and learn it really well, instead of dividing my time between numerous mods and balances, etc. I'll only get into mods if Uber's efforts die and the modders completely take over, and even then I'll wait for months or years until a mod comes out that ALMOST EVERYONE has before I start playing it.

    You know what I hate?

    I hate that inXile can make a second Kickstarter (Torment) before the first one is released (Wasteland 2), and have both bring in 4 mil and no one complain, while Uber, which is making a far more complex and difficult game, gets half the funding and would be hated everywhere if they tried to make a second Kickstarter, even after the release and critical and commercial success of the first.

    I think that Uber could get some inspiration of Steam Market. What if PA had little cosmetic things like perhaps hats for commanders or different models for units, some minor effect alterations and so forth which people could buy and/or would randomly drop after games very similarly to DOTA 2 or CS:GO which they could sell to other players with Uber getting a share just like Steam does (5% I think). It wouldn't change the game experience much but it could bring in some revenue and some incentive for players to play more.

    They could start with this, and if it ends up making enough money, they could turn the game free-to-play. It would be a harmless but potentially lucrative experiment.

    Planetary Annihilation Action Figures, pls.
    (Real life toys: commanders, bots, tanks, planes)

    PA mugs, cups, and other accessories and things.

    Shirts, umbrellas and other useless things with Planetary Annihilation written all over it.

    I mean someone being able to pay 10-40$ for a commander that builds faster that is not considered a mod so they can use it in non modded games. Or purchases of slightly better units. Anything that resembles a pay to win scheme. They can do whatever they want with mods because all users have to have the same mod so it stays balanced.

    We have no rights to decide what is acceptable.

    We can only say if we agree or not with a choice and why.

    Er... Yes we do. We're the people buying this stuff. Releasing utter crap with misleading marketing and charging money for it (not that I'm saying Uber did it, because they didn't) is not acceptable.

    I'M SORRY EA BUT "TOO MUCH INNOVATION" WAS NOT THE REASON PEOPLE HATE YOUR CRAPPY IOS DUNGEON KEEPER.

    screw turning this game f2p ... no absolutely against that ...

    i personaly agree with selling cosmetic stuff like the commanders or unitskins or a factionexpansion but latter sound rather difficuld to make with the existing one unitpool for every player idea ... so yea unitskins and commanders sounds good

    I'm not saying we do have a right, I just think it's good for Uber to see what their fan base will or will not pay money for in the future.
