Sure, we don't need achievements, but they're fun to have, assuming they're done right. Let's make some!

    Good achievements:
    Do not obstruct normal play.
Do not require luck or extraneous circumstances.

    Bad achievements:
    Require random obscure objectives
Happen automatically anyway ("well done you started the game!")

    Powerhouse:
Have the strongest economy in a match

    Supreme Commander:
    Win a multiplayer match

    Total Annihilation:
Defeat all opposition in Galactic War

    Together We Stand:
    Win a shared army match

    The End is Nigh:
Set a planet or moon on a collision course

    Hoarder:
Have 2,000 units alive during a match
(example - could be tiered e.g Hoarder I, Hoarder II)

    Just because I can:
Build 10 Halleys on one planet

Maybe we can talk about this:
    Form a dynamic alliance in a Free-For-All

    You can trust me:
Annihilate a player with whom you previously had an alliance.

    The Nicholson Way:
    Ride a planet to annihilation

    Castle crasher:

By the Progenitor: Win a match with the Progenitor

Nuclear Holocaust: Launch 100 Nukes in a single game

It's not a conspiracy: Land an Astraeus on a Moon

Star Wars Project: Build an Orbital Laser

Brad would be proud: Win by only using bots

"For the Belt" or "Boxing Champion" or something along those lines
Destroy an enemy commander with your commander

    Mass Casualties
Destroy (large number) of units with a Nuke

    (name?)
Invade an enemy occupied planet through a teleporter

    Once wasn't Enough
    Smash a planet twice

    King of the Hill
Win a 10 way FFA (or 40 way if we get those capabilities)

And then you'd just gotta have some large number achievements along the lines of "Win 50 multiplayer matches" and "Build 100,000 units (not in one game)" and "Extract 10,000,000 metal (not in one game)" and the like

Unfair since not everyone has the Progenitor

    Currently infeasible.

    Kinda too easy

    FTFY.

    No. It forces a play-style.

"Thinking with Portals"? or in case of copyright:

    "Gatecrasher".

    Infeasible? I disagree.

    or...

Although to be fair, the second one was a modded game with nukes only costing 10 metal.

There's nothing wrong with forcing a play style.

    Lots of achievements do that.

Dishonored had an achievement for no kills and an achievement for killing all targets. And... eh. I'm too tired to think of more.

I think it's a great achievement and there's nothing wrong with forcing a certain play style.

I don't really see it happening in regular games.

Ok you've convinced me. It's not that bad.

Nothing wrong with using mods to gain achievements. Torchlight 2 developers explicitly allowed that.

I'm afraid to kick off this discussion because it will almost certainly derail the thread but...
    Why not?

I'm tempted to put myself here, but I've seen achivements put to good use in some games, while horrible in others. I'll hold my opinion till I see more.

    Also, I love how
    summoned
^ their Yukari avatar. But I think that's just me. +1 for Touhou. Agree with your suggestion too.

How bout a "backer acknowledgement" achievement where if a player ends up in a game with a backer, they receive the achievement? (No, I'm not a backer, before anyone asks, & in terms of backers, I'm thinking of the ones who are way up there)

Since a planet can be utterly obliterated by a planet of equal mass (as in, BOOM!!! Completely destroyed) how about an achievement based on those conditions?
    "Planet Destroyer"
Use either a planet of equal mass to completely shatter a planet (if eventually coded--->) or smash more planets into a target than it could handle.

To be clear---^ I would like to see that if a planet gets smashed enough, it becomes fully destroyed (think Star Wars episode IV destroyed)

The nukes could be quite spread out in terms of use, & I wouldn't want to be able achieve every achievement easily in one game, I personally would like to have to work for it.

This naming is technically a copyright violation, & I don't remember Uber holding the rights to it.

& you know damned good & well that copyright holders can always cause a lawsuit over the damnedest things, no matter how small
