Shall I call the fire brigade now? Or wait until it's already ablaze?

Don't worry it's only the engineering department.

No, I agree with you. A little bit of radius gives you lots of surface area. I was just trying to visualize it compared to the earth.

Still 50km2 is not that much either. An average city, or there abouts.

Which I'd say is pretty impressive for a video game :p

I bet if we made an earth that size, continents to scale, everything, then set it up so you could only render what you were seeing, and had a couple super fast CPUs for processing the renders super fast, and then threw in 167 players at the capital cities of every major country.............

    We could simulate geopolitics.

    On Teamspeak.

    Let's do this.

The scale in that pic does seem a bit small though - I would have imagined the Leveler to be more than 6 - 7 meters wide.

    that is.. enormous already

Imagine the kind of server needed to run an rts game of that scale on one of those planets.

What about 3TB of SATA II 7200RPM HDD?

When I got it, it was what I wanted to use it for, but I imagine that it could take weeks, or even months to render all of that and write it with my measly i7-3770K.

no common HDD comes close to a even decent ssd in terms of speed.

At 7200RPM that would take... a very long time.

But even then, an SSD wont make a large difference.

You can set few of them in RAID. :)

it is if you want to show them on screen.

you get non-loaded textures if your GPU VRAM is insufficient, the only way to ever get enough would be to set up servers in SLI sync (which I seem to recall was possible) but PA itself does not support SLI.

I just kidding about software rendering. :D

SLI doesn't allow to share VRAM between GPUs. ;)

Well, I have RAID 0 120GB SSD, and RAID 0 1TB HDD. What I want is RAID 00 (though apparently it isn't all that beneficial without dual RAID cards) and some 1TB SSDs do do it, but I can't :p That's a solid $1000 in overkill.

Also, even at 15,000RPM, it would take a very long time, especially since I've used up my SATA III ports for my SSDs.

There's a reason most RTS games take the surface of the map to be flat.

Yes, its a lot easier to code. Technological uber have created something pretty special here.
