Show the total and planet surface area in the system editor. - https://github.com/JustinLove/surface_area (issues) - http://wondible.com/pa/surface_area_v1.3.1.zip - PAMM Version 1.3.1 - Fix current-planet area display - Make current-planet interactive with slider Version 1.3: Report gas surface area separately. Currently hardcoded for gas, so it will need an update if people start making other terrainless biomes Version 1.2: Move the system surface area out of the version div, since that div disappeared in the last PTE. Version 1.1: Change units to km^2 Lots of room for expansion - estimating playable land and water area, adding info to server browser, etc. Probably won't get to that for a while, but this offers some tools to judge the 'weight' (perf, number of players, etc) of a system.
I started with km^2, wanted to add commas, and then remembered the multi-unit code from the economy bar and game-over stats. In practice all playable planets are in the mega-range, so it may be overkill (as much fun as it is to see the T when what-iffing an earth sized planet).
I prefer km². You would need more than 55 planets of radius 1200 before you'd hit 1000 km² anyway, so the comma probably isn't important. (Also, have you considered making the 'surface area' a field that can be modified? Letting the user set the area value and then have the mod compute the radius needed and update the radius field with that value, as well as vice-versa? Not sure if it's do-able, I've never dealt with knockoutjs before, but it seems like it would be.)
Ah, I see - user error. K m^2 != km^2. That would actually work out nicely. https://github.com/JustinLove/surface_area/issues/3
Oh, I thought we were all on the same page that 1 M m² = 1 km². (pronounced: one mega square meter equals one square kilometer)
I think km² is considerably more recognizable than M m² for most people. If I tell someone to picture a million square meters, or tell them to picture a square kilometer, I think we both know which one will be easier for them (even if they are actually the same thing). It just makes more sense to give the map scale in square kilometers
