Option for even metal distribution?

    Hello,

Guys, I'm kinda tired of games going nowhere because of random. Sometimes you spawn with little metal surrounded by enemies, sometimes you spawn with no metal, sometimes you spawn in metal rich spot and enemy spawns in no metal spot and insta deletes commander. Ok, well you can turn spawn anywhere option. If there are some sweet spots on the planet, chances are you will have a commander duel right from the start, turning match into another wtf experience. You can't really go competitive with that.

What if we could have 'balanced metal' checkbox (in system designer or lobby), so when it is checked, some fancy algorithm distributes metal according to planet size and metal count. Even better if you could have further options, like clustered distribution (with evenly spread metal clusters, possibly connected together with lines of single metal), or totally even metal distribution. Dependent on metal count and planet size, pattern might be different, but always as even as it canget (with some imperfections caused by terrain). So you can have your starting spot that is no worse then your enemy has, and natural expansions that are the same for everyone as well.
And damn, when you area build stuff, it already distributes things evenly across the planet! Take a look at anchors, for example. Metal could follow the same algorithm, with exception that you will need to spawn additional metal on every nXY spot or something like that.

    What do you guys think?
I think it'd be awesome. Balanced matches, happy players.

easier said than done for one thing.

I also haven't experienced this as much as you apparently have. Relative spawn location has been more of an issue than metal distribution.

Would be a nice game mode I suppose, would be really hard to do though, once terrain is factored in.

Well, I think it's worth the challenge. Added gameplay variety, more comp-friendly, less player frustration.

I think that it would be awesome. Map control would mean something different, which adds variety. I approve! :D

While spawn-anywhere helps a lot with the inequality, this would definitely be a good option. My only concern is with lava planets or other obstacles- what happens when the metal ends up under impassable terrain like a lava lake or a desert plateau?

reducing metal clusters is another way to do this though.

But still that would not be good enough because i would like to see if the planet is actually balanced in lobby. So yes a 'balanced' check box would be great.

Full approval, would allow for proper competitive maps.

I only like to see this on metal worlds.

Why only metal? Better to have an option when creating a map to have competitive metal distribution.

Metal planets are organised, and fit the whole balanced feel.

But mainly, I just don't see it working out with the terrain.

Having half your metal spots under terrain props or just downright inaccessible would make the whole effort pointless.

Also, I just kinda don't like the idea.

If metal spot conflicts with terrain, push it to closest unoccupied spot.
In case of lava filled planets, might as well just delete those that are in lava.

We need to have some "hand made" maps maybe flat ones too. Then the metal would be distributed nicely.

Afaik your not the only one complaining about fairness in planets. Last patch there was a big change and all the fairish planets got scrambled into random. Only thing you can do is make and test new planets.

    I second this.
