It is a proper name. Screw you censorship. Screw you. Spotted D/i/c/k/:p I only did this because I had to figure this out. Had to.
and that's how you beat pattern recognition.

Twitch or Steam (I forget which) censor ladder.pastats.tk

    I still don't understand why.

About the new '40 players mega game':

What matters is the amount of units, not the amount of players. And when i think if a galaxy with 10 moons, 40 players each having 1000 units i'm starting to feel sorry for the server, players and computers that have to witness that, mainly because atm the game can bearly hold 1000 units...unless you like to play in 2fps.

    But... suprise me Uber!

You what this game kinda needs?. It needs a sort of system kinda like that P2P for downloads. like if the game can fully utilize your cpu or gpu, you could volunteer it to be used with others.

Not sure if there would be a demand for something like that. Its just kinda like the more that plays the more resources there would be to help other players games run smooth.

Obviously there is the whole issues of people suddenly turning off their pc's.

Maybe its just me, but if this game is this demanding, im not sure how Uber wanna keep being able to pay the server bills, because it sounds like they are gonna need a few of the top 500 super computers to handle the load. In a sense this game almost needs MMO server cluster.

In my experience PA holds up to about 5000 units ish reasonably well...

that's server release out of it's nutshell, but yeah.

server-side is basically that at a more manual level. Of course, being able to start and stop servicing clients dynamically and at any time and at the click of a single button would be even better and I wouldn't say no to it.

but Uber already said server is a non-1.0

You're so wrong. More players means more eyes and more points of conflict. My favourite game of PA was a 25 player game on a single moon with four teams. Battles on so many fronts.

From a performance standpoint I would object to this notion.
Currently Uber can optimise all they damn well please, bandwidth consumption will still increase linearly for the server with the number of players/observers. Thus an added player/observer should pretty much always be more expensive than an equivalent increase in units.
Some sort of 'multicasting' networking approach with teams and observers treated as groups might be interesting, though, at least for very large numbers of teams/observers.

We are talking about performance, not about gameplay.

Who is we? You didn't quote anyone and the post before yours is mine and I wasn't talking about performance.

I both agree and disagree. Yes, server side bandwidth needs will increase with every player who joins. But they have already done tons of optimisations to reduce bandwidth requirements since I joined in early beta. And they are still working on reducing that information flow to what is absolutely necessary. So it is completely possible they can reduce the /player bandwidth requirements to a level where, let's say, a 40 player game is completely feasible, both from the unit count and the player count PoW.

    Forty Players?!
Only for shared army (the best thing in PA IMHO!) or even for FreeForAll? Because that would require you to have forty colours that are still easy to identify!

I hope we will see ranks (like Silver, Gold or whatever), and not just a plain number to determine your "skill".

A number makes it easier to create higher and higher ranks, it also makes it very easy to recognize someone's of a higher rank than another, how could you tell which is better between "Destroyer of worlds" and "Uber machine" for example.

The TA Spring ranking symbols are quite easy to read.... You start off with 1 stripe, then 2, then 3 (you can see where this is going...) then it moves onto stars (first bronze, then silver, then gold) and finishes with an extra large gold star. Each has a tool tip with it too...

They start at "rookie" and finish with "badly needs to get laid" XD

Edit: Note that the 'ranks' shown in spring are separate from skill and denote experienced based on in game time. They're useful for basic balancing as a very new player (1 - 3 stripes) is pretty much guaranteed weaker than the 'star' ranked players just based on knowledge of the game.

I'm really hoping PA includes a simple indicator of experience as I think this is the no.1 thing we need right now to allow us to better cater for the large influx of new players. If you can tell who the vet and newer players are, you can distribute them between teams to give everyone a chance...
