Probably because of formations, air is super slow when you give them a move command. Any large group of air, including fighters, bombers, gunships and transports, mixed or not, will try to form up before going to their destination. They travel at about a quarter of their speed, which can be costly, especially if you want these units to get out of AA fire quickly, or have to comsnipe etc.. This is super frustrating and makes these group air raids practically impossible.

Isn't this because units travel at the speed of the slowest unit in the group?
    Imsvale and Clopse like this.

This. In mixed group, you have to select only your fighters if you want them to defend quickly.
Maybe we need the option beetween «travel with the slower unit» and «reach destination asap»

    Attack move does the latter.

Yes, but for above scenario, I doubt anyone will have the lucidity to use attack command to retreat units instead of move. It's counter-intuitive.
Especially for people not relying on keyboard for issuing command.

Nope, you can test it out for yurself. If you have 30 fighters doing an area patrol then get them to move theyll take ages to form up then theyll attack/move.
