New way for trolls to ruin the game

I mean yeah, the forum community is more good than evil but the the in-game community?

Keep it as is and just report that person. Allow everyone to do as they need. Don't put limitations but instead make bad behavior have some actual effects to the offender. See his screen name and send support a message talking about why this person is ruining yours and others gaming experience and fun. Uber will find a solution. They have all made games before and I'm guessing this is not the first pause button bullshit they have had to deal with.

This has nothing to do with connection.

This is talking about trolling in general. Trolls will always troll. If there's a proposed change to make it so trolls won't troll, then they'll find a new way to troll. We shouldn't remove features because trolls exploit them.

Easy example, the deletion of units. Trolls were deleting commanders in shared armies because they're trolls. Some people were asking to have the delete unit feature removed, or require everyone to confirm the deletion of the unit. That's bad. That's removing a useful feature because of trolls. As for the confirmation, then the trolls will still ask to delete the unit and fill your game with confirmations. or they'll just cancel all of your build orders.

If there's a limit to the number of pauses, then trolls will use up the number of pauses and ruin it for everyone.

The point is, trolls will always troll. Removing a useful feature because of trolls is bad.

We need other ways to combat trolls aside from removing useful features.

If a player trolls you, add him to your blocked list so he can't play with you anymore.

I base that assumtion on my experience plus just what kind of game this is. You don't see chess masters name-calling each other and going on about how they had sex with each other's mothers, do you?

well I think PA is right there on the chess side, as I personally regard it as harder and more complex than chess, and this whole lot is far away from the COD/LOL "habbits".

I see the person who behaved this way with the pause button as a stray who got lost from his COD/LOL garden.

either he adopts this new place as well as it's attitudes and behaviors or he'll feel homesick and find his way back.

This, right here, is the near way to handle it currently. Nobody can troll past that. Although it would be really awesome when Uber puts in an in-game report function.

How to prevent or limit trolling in ladder though?

There should be no pausing in ladder games, or at least very limited. Allow one max 2 minute timeout, or something like that. Infinite pausing by one player obviously can't be allowed. (I'm going to lose? no way, let's put this on pause until he disconnects...)

Also in matches like random 8 player FFA you really don't want anyone pausing ever, for any reason. There should be an option the host can set to disable it.

Best solution:

Pauses need to be agreed upon by a majority. (2/3, 2/4, 3/5, 3/6,etc.)
Pauses have a cooldown adjusted in the lobby by the host.

To unpause, the majority needs to vote for it. This way, you can have pauses that the majority will have supported, and it will unpause when the majority is ready. This way, honest people keep people honest, and the trolls will have a much rougher time trolling.

(And hosts maybe have unlimited and ultimate pause/unpause ability?)


As for ladder, no pausing, no mercy.

50% isn't a majority, it's half.

The pause features and limitations are totally worth talking about. I brought up a limit pretty early after they were added, courtesy a troll that I ran into while playing the game as well. I think we'll add a three-limit in the future, but also actively investigate other solutions that don't punish folks who need to actually pause the game.
