I like the new effect, but I think it's a little too... glassy? It looks like molten glass, which is cool, but not for an explosion. Also, make the smoke/black stuff hang around longer, it looks like it dissolves too fast.

Brilliant work on the explosions, both commander and nuke!

Is it possible to get the nuke missile trail to cast a shadow too? just seeing the shadow of the missile itself looks a bit out of place, especially when the explosion casts one.

The way we do shadows there's currently no way to do soft shadows. The new nuke effect is opaque like it is so that it can cast shadows and they don't look completely out of place. I have some modifications to the current nuke trail so that the smoke trail is at least shadowed by the planet, but they don't cast shadows themselves. I've been giving the issue of transparent shadows some though.

The main problem is any solution is going to be slow, or at least slower than what we currently do.

    Something like opacity shadow maps?

The easy solution would just be to make the nuke trail opaque too. :p It's a really good aesthetic for PA.

Very cool explosion. Much better than the original. It would be nice if it stuck around a bit longer at the very end. (When it turns all black, slow down the dissolving of the cloud.)

Dude, you are insane! 71 minutes to set this up? Awesome!

So, did you do an area attack on the whole planet with all the nukes selected basically?

I think the nuke explosion would look better if it was red-based instead of blue-based. It looks way hotter if it's red. The Comm would look fine as blue since it's special anyway.

So, nuke and commander explosion share the same effect, right ? (can't check because I got an AMD GPU )
I'd prefer the warm color for the nuke (yellow/orange/red) and cold white/spark/blue for the commander ;)

The blue one is the commander's. The nuke is blue in Brian's second video because of an issue with a mod.

Seems to be an issue on all AMD cards. Hopefully it'll be fixed soon and we can experience glorious nuclear fires again!
