A couple of builds ago I had lost faith in PA, I couldn't see how it was going to be what we all hoped it would be. But now, it's the single best game I've ever played and everything is going in completely the right direction. I remember when I first played Supreme Commander and I thought that it was a wonderful 'sequel' to Total Annihilation, it was basically how TA had been in my head but so much better. In the years since then I've had enormous fun playing Forged Alliance, but the more the nuances became understood, the more flaws became apparent. ZePilot's FAF has done an exemplary job of fixing so many of those issues, and he and the others that have worked on it deserve huge praise for what they have done. But still nothing can change some fundamental aspects of SCFA that conspire to make it feel less organic and less emotionally invested as Total Annihilation did. PA has captured that feel, the solidity, the fluidity, the shifting, organic feel. I started playing computer games back in the days of the Commodore 64, and back then a large part of the experience was the imagination that one projected onto the game because the technical limitations meant that any game was only ever a symbolic representation of what was intended. PA has taken that which was implied by TA and made it real. Thank you to all at Uber for bucking the trend and making a labour of love in a landscape that has shifted in such a way that everybody thought that this sort of game was a thing of the past, and in doing so proven that it is still feasible to do it.
I feel very similarly, i was losing faith when it was going to be released "in a week or so", since they pushed it back, they really have hit a lot of the major flawed points which were worrying me about the game
I agree, the combat balance and art are constantly improving. I feel Planetary Annihilation has moved closer to Total Annihilation's spirit in the past couple of builds. Still some things missing, still some things which I disagree with, but the game's improved considerably. Smashing work Uber
Thanks for all the good thoughts people. After over 2 years it's really starting to come together. And don't forget we are going to keep working on it for a long time to come.
It really sounds like developing PA is like laying a (sphere) puzzle of a million pieces. Today we only have about 10k left.
Yes! Thanks for all of this. I also look forward to the updates post-release. I'm hoping this has the longevity of Nethack.
Its rough, thinking it's been 2 years. I was partially worried it has been a long time and it is starting to seem "less exotic", but it's aged well.
The latest builds definitively gave a really better feel to the game, you did a real great job and yes .. thank you !
Indeed, the Uber team deserves major thanks. Through all the technical challenges they've managed to create an extremely enjoyable game that dare I say might even be able to compete with the likes of starcraft. And even if it doesn't this game represents something in a way. So often early access games enter a stage of infinite development, but this game will be an example of what happens when that doesn't happen. Not only that but this game dared to go where no other RTS had gone before. Not only taking the genre to spherical maps but to freaking SPACE. If this game somehow doesn't leave an impact on the RTS genre, something is very wrong.
Uber are cool because they made the MNC games and they're making this; I commend them for just making really cool sh*t they obviously have passion for. Also Brad Nicholson is really cool and sexy and he should come here and flex for hours on end
I know it's a long way off and we all hope it never comes but in the distant future after the game is released and uber is finishing the last big patch also know as big rock features it should be known as the shooting star. You all have captured the true imagination of the rts world
What's crazy for me is that I usually get sick of games very quickly, yet this has not been the case for me when it comes to PA. From the kickstarter video to the first livestream all they way to now I have constantly been impressed. Every game I have played has been unique & fun in it's own way and I always end a match being like, damn that was freaking epic! Another game before work? Yeayaaaa! I have been thoroughly captivated by this game. Watching development has been an amazing experience and a true source of entertainment and inspiration. Taking the path you did seems to have so many beneficial sides to it. Although I am sure there are negatives as well. For example, having community involvement has probably had both positive and negative effects. Thank you all very much for the communication and showing us the process of building an epic game! You guys really are revolutionizing the rts genre. I tried playing some other rts games and couldn't stand not being able to zoom out. Not having area commands and pathetically small armies was frustrating as well. Of course those games are unique in there own ways. I'm just not sure I will be able to go back. I'm spoiled!! Now I can have massive battles taking place across multiple planets while simultaneously building engines on one that will actually move and change the environment of my map (solar system wtf?!) I continue to look forward to the new features and where and what PA will evolve into. Keep up the good work and thank you for dreaming
I just recently purchased PA and I am having more fun than I ever imagined. I have not played TA and I'm not a huge fan of SupCom so unfortunately I did not hear about PA until post kickstarter but I've been following its development ever since and I wish I could have backed it from the beginning. Thanks for the awesome game Uber!
