Not sure what you're talking about.

Care to explain or provide some images?

Having the whole page slide down when your mouse touches the header image is not pleasant at all - at least in my opinion, and I'm (unfortunately) a fairly seasoned redditor.

I appreciate you're trying to make room for a slightly larger header image, but I think people would be willing to meet you halfway on that, literally, in exchange for the page not moving around as much. By that I mean, I'd suggest increasing the header image height by about half of the amount you've increased it from default, and turn off the mouse-over behaviour.

Having a tiled, blown up, compressed, pixelated screenshot that expands to cover a large chunk of the screen when I mouse over it does not look good in my opinion.

I had the same concerns that you do, but I am trying it as an experiment to see everyone's response.

The pixelation is the image, not because of compression. All explosion effects are heavily pixelated like that. Zoom in on an explosion and you'll see what I mean.

You have a very wide monitor. A monitor larger than most people. If I make the image so large to accommodate your super large monitor, the load time will kill everyone else's experience. The best I can do is stop the tiling.

Thanks for turning off the mouse-over, that's much better. I'm not being nit-picky here I promise, but while we're on the subject of the CSS, what happened to the Progenitor Snoo?

The explosions have it pretty bad, yes. They have to deal with a low resolution to begin with, compression and then rescaling.
But they aren't the only part of the image that is; I can tell pretty immediately by looking at the bots, etc (and no, it isn't just because AA was turned off, though that definitely doesn't help either).
Anyway, turning tiling off is a good idea. I think the header needs a lot more work though (and I think it needed it before); It's still too tall in my opinion, the alien icon (as well as the awful black reddit text that comes with it) should be replaced (preferably by a commander or something), the white subreddit title is pretty bad, same with the tabs.
As an example, here's a much nicer looking subreddit (in my opinion):
    http://www.reddit.com/r/tf2/

If you don't like the image, then submit one to the contest. It'll change every week.

For the rest of the head. Yes. I know some changes are needed. I'm going with an iterative process. Try some changes, see how they go. Tweak. Repeat.

As for the rest of the design of the subreddit, since we're changing topics, I have a redesign for the subreddit partially completed. But there is a ton of bug testing required in a subreddit redesign. There are a lot of elements that only show up on certain pages or in certain situations and the like. It'd be easy to redesign a subreddit and miss... say... styling for when something is stickied or something.

A complete redesign of the subreddit is coming, but I do have a life.

Not sure. Might have been accidentally removed at some point.

Reddit's tools for editing the visuals aren't the greatest.

    Can't find the original.

    Hey Brian,

I really like the idea of the contest, and there have already been some decent submissions for a new header on that Reddit thread.

However ... the current header image is ridiculous. I assumed it'd quickly be changed after everyone noticed how huge it was and that it was breaking the sub's layout - but it's still there! Are you actually waiting til the 7th to change it? You guys can't be serious in letting the sub look like the mods left it alone after an experiment gone wrong for a whole week ...
