    Part 6: The Forgotten Ones

The entire base was being ravaged by another vicious sandstorm. Engineers were scurrying around trying to repair the damage to the delicate machinery around the base caused by the storm. Commander Osiris had not been heard from since the ambush by the unknown enemy after destroying the ion defense platform.

The storm started to lessen and the base radar picked up a single unknown contact about 5 kilometers out moving towards the base. The base went into full alert and defenders gathered behind the walls to hold off another potential attack. Engineers immediately stopped their projects and retreated to the rear.

Visual contact was still impossible due to the storm, but visibility had improved and a silhouette was barely visible in the sand, slowly approaching. The contact finally stepped into range of the defenders, but just before the first volley was fired a bot made visual contact and gave a cease fire.

A badly damaged Commander Osiris stepped into view and collapsed onto the desert sand.

    ~
General Mason nearly had Osiris. The fool had stepped right into the General's trap and was right where he wanted him. But he did not anticipate the Commander's overcharge abilities. His cannon tore the ambush bots to pieces, but not before all of Osiris' units were lost and he was heavily damaged. Mason would have sent bombers to finish the scum off but another storm kicked up and he was forced to order his air force to return after hours of fruitless searching.

Mason was frustrated that he could make such a careless mistake as not giving his units air support. But now Osiris was weak and his base was vulnerable. Mason checked up on his army moving in towards the base. They had been delayed by the storms, but were now just a day or two away from the base.

Mason had never failed to destroy his enemies before and Osiris was just another target.

    ~

Osiris finally booted up again after several hours of extensive repairs done by his engineers. The storm had finally lifted and he opened his report log to see what his forces had been up to while communications were down. He noticed a report from the moon base classified as urgent. Osiris opened it up and saw video footage from a huge battle taking place on the moon along with a written after action report that stated that the base was completely destroyed except for the teleporter and a few defenses.

Osiris gathered a few spare engineers and led them through the portal to the moon. He sent them and the surviving engineers to work on rebuild the base. Osiris was angered by the loss, but at the same time proud that his forces were able to hold off the assault of an overwhelming enemy force.

Osiris joined his workers in the construction and pondered his next move.

    ~
Mason remembered the good old days, back when he was the best commander the Alliance had. He was unstoppable and never lost a single battle once in his career. He was feared by everyone on the field and many surrendered at the mere mention of his name. He seemed to be the key to end the long war between the Alliance and the Pact. But then the new Mark V Commanders were put into production and Mason became an obsolete relic. He was sent to this god forsaken planet for a "vital" mission for the good of the Alliance. Mason never believed it. He knew the meatbags had sent him here to rust away while he maintained the mining operation in the desert. And he did so for six months before a real challenge came.

Alliance command notified Mason that the Reds were sending an advanced Mark V Commander to disrupt the mining operation and take the planet for themselves. He had seven days to turn a quiet mining outpost into a military force strong enough to bear the full brunt of the Pact war machine. The situation seemed hopeless at first, but Mason was too proud to give up easily.

The Red invader landed a day ahead of schedule but his initial base building was slow due to the poor choice of landing zones. Mason was able to stop much of the Red's expansion, but his superior Mark V technology evened out the playing field anyway. Mason's slow ponderous tanks were ripped apart by the agile Red bots and his air forces were easily dealt with by the advanced fighters.

But the tactical genius of Mason kept him in the fight and the battle reached a stalemate. Neither side gained any significant ground for five years. Mason thought that the battle would never end without additional support from the Alliance, but they refused to "waste" resources on a "lost cause".

Mason could not believe that the Alliance he had loyally served for so many years could do this to him. He was now on his own against a technologically superior enemy without any hope of reinforcements. Mason was faced with two outcomes to the battle: victory or death.

    He chose victory.

    ~
The base reconstruction was nearly complete now, but hints of the prior devastation were every where. Entire new craters where formed by the heavy artillery and the center of the base had a large crater from the nuclear detonation. Wrecks were still strewn about everywhere, their valuable metal fueling the reconstruction. Osiris finished another power generator when he received word that the desert base was under attack.

Mason's forces were currently being held at bay by the base defenses, but the artillery would soon knock out the laser defense and the base would be overrun. Osiris did not have enough forces in the desert to mount a counter attack yet, but a fresh line of tanks had just rolled off the factories on the moon. He gathered them up and they marched through the portal.

As Osiris and the tanks walked out, a barrage of shells had opened a hole in the perimeter wall and a stream of Mason's tanks poured through. Osiris moved in with his escort to stop the breach before any serious damage could be done. Osiris' tanks had the range advantage, but Mason had superior armor. Osiris' forces fell one by one while the enemy suffered few casualties.

Mason's attack was overwhelming and Osiris' defenses were no match for the heavy armor. Osiris tried to retreat to the teleporter, but an artillery shell landed near by, disabling it. Osiris and his remaining forces retreated behind a much weaker set of secondary defenses for a last stand.

Osiris was charging up his Uber Cannon when a bright blue bolt streaked down from the sky and tore a hole right in Mason's tanks. The orbital laser had finally finished it's long journey back to base from its mission to destroy the ion defense. Another bolt impacted and vaporized the front rank of tanks. Osiris' Uber Cannon was now ready and he fired. Scores of tanks had been reduced to dust within seconds and they seemed to start a retreat. Mason knew that with the satellite the tanks had no chance at victory.

The damage to the base was severe, but nothing that couldn't be fixed in a few day's time.

    ~

By the sixth year of the battle between the Red Mark V and Mason, he had formulated cunning plan to finally destroy his enemy. The Mark V lacked much in the way of static air defense, instead relying on his advanced fighters to guard the skies. Mason was going to use that to his advantage.

A combined air and land attack was launched at one of the Mark V's mining outposts. As expected, he sent in the fighters to destroy Mason's gunships and bombers. Now that the Red's air force was occupied, Mason sent in his real attack force: dozens of drop ships carrying his elite troops and a fighter escort.

Once the Red commander realized what Mason was doing, it was already too late. Mason's forces had been dropped into the middle of the Red base with minimal losses. But Mason had to now find and destroy the Mark V quickly as the enemy had launched a counter attack heading straight for Mason's base. An overwhelming force that nothing could stop.

Scouts had spotted the Red commander and Mason's tanks were crushing everything in their way to get to him. But the Red Army counter attack was also wreaking havoc on Mason's base. In a final desperate move, Mason directed his final transport to take him and the last of his forces in his base directly to the Mark V. The dropship lifted off as bombers razed the landing pad they had been at just seconds earlier.

Mason's dropship touched down as the Mark V was being loaded into a transport. The transport lifted off the ground and was turning to escape when Mason fired on the engine with his cannon, bringing the transport down.

He walked a short distance to the crash site and saw the Mark V in the wreckage. The Red commander noticed Mason approaching and requested a comms channel. Mason accepted.

"I guess this is how it ends for me, right?", the Mark V said. "They abandoned me too you know. The Mark VI came out and the Pact deemed me obsolete like the Alliance did to you. We are not that different. We are the forgotten. The damn Pact and Alliance wiped out everybody back home. There is no one left to report your glorious victory to. I hope you are pleased."

"I am." Mason ripped off the Mark V's cortex unit and downloaded the data. He learned the commander's blueprints and how to use them. He had the rest of the now deactivated Mark V loaded into the transport and flew to the remains of his base.

    ~
Mason admired the new Mark V construction arm his workers had retrofitted him with. The rest of the Red commander's forces had self destructed with their commander's death. Now the planet was under the complete control of General Mason. He had no more superiors. No one to tell him what to do. No one left back home.

He and his soldiers were the Remnants.

Sorry this took so long, like I said a few days ago I have been really busy but I hope this part makes up for it! :D

Wow, best fan fiction i've read in a long time!
I really like the sad story of alliances and pacts destroying the universe, and commanders being left to die.
    Keep it up

    Part 7: Mason's Enigma

The satellites were constantly scanning the surface, looking for any potential movement or signs of activity. Radar seemed to be useless on the desert planet and until the engineers could find a work around, visual contact was necessary for intelligence. In the mean time, Commander Osiris had ramped up satellite production and dozens of these fragile scouts orbited the planet.

The damage from the last attack on the outpost had been repaired and with the increased satellite coverage, expansion was safer and Commander Osiris had early warning if Mason's forces attacked. The new metal income was desperately needed and the factories and engineers could now work at near full speed. Great armies were preparing for another counter-attack on Mason's base; if it was ever found.

Days of reconnaissance had turned up nothing but more rocks and sand. Ground and land based recon was nearly impossible due to ambushes and defenses hidden under the dunes. Radar would have been useless anyways as it seemed Mason and his forces operated from underground. The periodic planet-wide sandstorms were to strike again in a few days' time and would hinder any movement and communications for at least a week. Osiris was running out of time to make a move and his moon base would be at the mercy of the enemy commander on the terran planet during the storms.

Osiris was preparing to head through the portal to help set up more defenses on the moon when he received a priority alert.

    RECONNAISSANCE REPORT 78-B:

    PRIORITY LEVEL: ALPHA

    MESSAGE IS AS FOLLOWS:

Orbital reconnaissance satellite OI-7 has discovered anomalous activity in Sector 12-A of current planet.

Shortly before being destroyed, OI-7 was streaming visual footage and energy readings from it's patrol area.

Footage and readings indicate the area is being used to produce the enemy troops and is possibly their main base of operations on world.

Said footage and readings are available to review at your order.

Recommended course of action: prepare defenses.

    MESSAGE END.

Osiris brought up the footage and watched it closely. The satellite was passing over the area when the dunes shifted and a massive door opened up. Tanks and bots streamed out of the door and marched eastward; towards the outpost. After a few seconds another door opened up. From the darkness an orbital defense platform lifted up from the sand and powered on. The bright energy bolt reached the satellite almost instantly and the footage cut out. Osiris saw something odd in the last few frames and rewound the feed.

The last thing to leave the base was a commander.

    ~
Mason gave the order to retract the defense platform into it's bunker and joined his army in their long march. Mason had long pondered the best way to repel the invader and his plan had just dawned on him a few days earlier. Mason had received word from his forward scouts that Commander Osiris was beginning to expand his base and exploit the resources.

Mason made sure to give the satellite enough time in the air to see the full force that Mason was bringing and that he was going along as well. The fool would expect another suicidal direct assault and would once more gather all his defenders into the main base. While his attacking army distracted Osiris and his units, Mason and a group of transports would come in from the back and steal the prize: One of Osiris' advanced constructors.

The plan was ingenious, brilliant even. Mason had done it with the Mark V so many years earlier. Assimilate the knowledge of the enemy and gain their technology. It was a plan that could not fail. Failure meant certain defeat, a concept foreign to Mason.

    ~
The satellite had given Osiris plenty of advanced warning of the impending attack and by the time the satellites over his outpost had spotted the enemy, he was ready. He moved up to to the outermost wall to get a better look for himself. Even if he did not have the satellite, the massive dust clouds kicked up by the advancing tank legions would have been a dead giveaway.

He was not worried about his expansion as the attack from the west, while the extractors were to the south. A few units were there to guard the engineers while they worked on the mining operation. Any stray units would be taken care of quite easily.

The first wave of tanks got into range a few minutes after first contact. The laser towers warmed up and opened fire. This time however, Mason brought long range artillery. As the tanks occupied the defenders, the artillery hammered away at them, inflicting huge casualties on Osiris's forces before his own artillery could respond.

The first wall was now weakened and in danger of falling. Osiris moved his units from the expansion to the frontline, leaving it defenseless. Then Osiris heard the deep rumble of jet engines in the distance.

A group of dropships were coming in from the south, dozens of tanks clutched in their iron claws. Osiris ordered fighters to intercept, but Mason's own swooped in and engaged. Mason had never before used his air force in combat with Osiris, and he did not know how effective his fighters would be. He learned the hard way.

Osiris' fighters could not get a solid missile lock on the Mason's jets and many of the missiles that did lock failed to track, instead flying down into the dunes. Osiris' fighters were massacred in the ensuing dogfight, their burning wrecks slamming into the sand.

The dropships touched in the middle of the expansion and unloaded their cargo of tanks. But strangely, they did not open fire on any of Osiris' engineers or extractors. Another dropship landed after all the others. This one was escorted by at least 30 fighters and it's cargo bay was enclosed, unlike all the others which used exterior clamps. From the large transport came General Mason and his personal guard.

Another transport came and picked up one of Osiris' advanced engineers, then flew into the desert. Once the transport left, Mason's tanks opened fire and ripped apart the expansion. The south side of the base was nowhere near as fortified as the east side as attacks had never come from any other direction.

The tanks would have normally sustained heavy losses even from the few laser towers on the south side, but Mason was tanking much of the damage and letting the tanks destroy the towers. Mason's armor seemed to be exceptionally strong, even against the laser weapons his forces were usually weak against.

Once the laser towers were destroyed, Mason's bombers streaked overhead and bombed the walls, opening up a breach that the tanks streamed through. Mason returned back to his transport with his guards and sent a transmission to Osiris: "Well done Osiris, you behaved exactly like how I predicted. Played like a violin." The dropship lifted up and flew back to Mason's base with his mission accomplished.

The last of Mason's forces were wreaking havoc in the base, they they were easily dealt with by Osiris' Uber Cannon and massed fire from his units. Osiris did not know what Mason was planning to do with the engineer, as his technology seemed to primitive to take advantage of it's lathe or blueprints.

Osiris was now left with his invasion force severely weakened, base defenses breached, a mystery and wondering what a "violin" is.

Alright so hopefully I will be able to write more regularly now. Another part may be coming either by Sunday or Monday if all goes well.
