40 players, why and how.

    UBER, you promised us 40 players... what do we have? 10 players...


    I understand that it might be a little troubly with 40 players but still, IT WOULD BE AWESOME.
    Have you ever seen this video?



    This video is the reason why i bought PA, that is the best match ever to be possible!
    (Expect some awesome commboxing matches)

    Okay this is how it could work :

    In the search game list there would be two tabs ;

    - Normal Games (1-10 players)
    - Extreme Games (10-40 players)

    In the Extreme games tab there would be a message ALWAYS displaying saying :

    Warning! Extreme games can cause extreme lagg on your computer, if you have a slow computer please considering not playing this kind of games. If you have a somewhat slow computer but want to play, try to shut down every application possible.

    In the extreme games there could only be a maximum of 10 teams (or 11, depends on how many colors there are)

    All games must be shared army (Unless it can get a little troubly as there are 8 shared armies, taking up 8 coloors and one non shared army taking up 4 colors. (There might be a smart solution to this, but this is what i think))

    When your army dies (if the server does not crash first) you will get a message saying ;

    Do you want to enter spectator mode (Warning this may be very,very,very laggy)

    And then two buttons either saying to stay, or leave to the main menu.

    There could also be like a warning when you enter a shared army with a certain amount of people.

    Anyways that's just my idea, hope you guys at UBER reads this.

    Don't worry once the server is released changing the 10 player limit will be as easy as changing a number. The number we hacked before basically just moved to the server side. We'll be there again.

    From what I understand, the reason they set the limit to 10 is not because the game can't handle it. It's because multiple games run on a single server, so if one game has 40 players it starts to hog all the resources of that server. They don't have any technology in that balances the load so that the other games with less players don't suffer. It makes sense that they can't really up the limit until this technology is in, otherwise people doing 1v1s would get massive lag from the people playing a 20v20 on the same server.

    Basically it's 10P + 2 specs until Uber can create the tech to have a server offload the work onto another server if one game is hogging all of its resources.

    I wonder if uber might get a dedicated server for hosing one or two of the games at a time, possibly with large amounts of spectators too.

    No message necessary because the game isn't finished. There's still lots of optimization yet to be done.

    40 players was supposed to be possible with load balancing.
    Haven't heard anything about that feature lately...

    Hint hint.

    I doubt Uber will do that...

    But PA Matches certainly will.

    In another live video recently they talked about it, I think Meta did and he stated that once the game is more finished, they can do more optimizing, bigger planets, less bandwidth usage, more players...

    We just have to wait and let to their magic.

    Yupp. They need to finish the game more before they can focus on optimizing. Unfortunate, but unavoidable and understandable.

    And they only did that temporarily, because 1 server hosts 8 games, and the server doesn't know a 40 player game from a 2 player one. It was making life a living hell for the other poor saps running on the other 7 games with the 40 player one.

    So it was a courtesy thing. And it is temporary. It is more than possible on release. Although you might want to allow players to use the same colors and also add more colors.

    Everywhere PA is being advertised, they advertise that 40 player games will be possible.

    I don't know how exactly they will do it, but there is no reason to believe that they will NOT do it.

    We've already had 40 player matches. 40 player matches were pretty laggy. 20 player matches were pretty stable. And that was quite a few months ago. There's been a lot of optimization since then, and a lot yet to come.

    Uber constantly says how there is a lot of optimization yet to be done to the game.

    40 player match? Yeah, that'll be very doable. We'll even get more than 40, especially with higher end computers and servers.

    One of the major changes needed to make 40 player games possible (with no lag) is for uber to multi thread the simulation. This hasn't been done yet- as far as I'm aware each simulation gets 1 thread on the server, so it's impressive how well that copes with 10 players atm.

    The reason it has been limited is not because it isn't possible clientside, or that people who have the PCs for it want to take the risk - it's because doing so lags the server for everyone. You would literally need an entirely different server to run ONE GAME to not affect everyone else.

    i am still wondering how such big matches shall work out ... 40 players on 10 main planets plus satalites ...
    and this is a friggin rts ... it is not a grand stategy game like europa universalis were you have a giant map but not much to do unitwise and it isn´t sins of a solar empire either were your army afair was limited ... i´m still skeptical that a well ammount of players is going to enjoy those matches because of the possible lenghs of a match and attention you have to bring in even with saving ..

    however i still find it awesome how scaleable the game is even just in its current state ...
    like you can still have your less than half an hour starcraft/command and conquer like small skirmishes but on the other side those big systemwide multiplanetspawning and planetdevastating wars ...
    i say it again ... this game or more precise the engine uber made for it ... has MASSIV potential ... it is ... intimidating ...

    They are massive, epic, intense, and AWESOME.

    yea i know ... but did you have them with 20+ planets?

    having 40 players on one giant planet ... say 4k radius .. 6? 8K? might be a far different expierence than having them spread over the whole system ...

    ... also ... 40 player FFA on a lavaplanet island ... OMFG DAT ROYALRUMBLING !!!

    Imagine a 40 way match where everyone starts on their own planet.

    That's where PA will REALLY separate itself from the pack.
