Ah Source mods, do you ever let us down? Fistful of Frags is a mod from 2007, but it was recently released FOR FREE as standalone on Steam.

The standalone doesn't have all the features the mod has, but the dev is porting them over from the original Source SDK 2007 version.

It seems to be the done thing now that all old HL2 Mods are coming out as Stand-alone. Dear Esther, Insurgency, The Stanley Parable...
It's cool they released this 100% for free though. I'm not particularly interested in cowboy shooting though, so I'll prolly pass on it.

Because having to stop moving in order shoot accurately definitely is something more than just a stupid mechanic to slow the game down.

    Truth: it's not.

Ye I play this game all day:

I have a lot more authority than you when it comes to discussing skill in FPS.

Have you played the game? Because if there's one thing it isn't, it's slow.

Ah, the ol' "judge a game before playing it" trick.

Here's what happened. I said that judging by the mechanics of the game, I would not enjoy it. You replied by implying that is the case because I'm not skilled enough. In other words, you made it about my personal skill level. I then said that I play an fps that is pretty much as hardcore as it gets, so skill based games are not something I dislike.

But keep telling yourself I'm the bad guy here. It's good for your ego.

That was a joke. I thought yelling would make that obvious but ok.

Now how can you judge mechanics without playing it?

FPS games very, very rarely have truly unique mechanics. By understanding competitive gaming design theory, you can pretty much judge the basic gameplay of 90% of FPS games. Playing and trying to understand a game like Quake, Starcraft BW, CS, DOTA or UT gives you that understanding.

    Example:
Your accuracy decreases when you move. So you have to stand still to really aim. Your opponent has to do the same thing. This means the fights become about who can put their crosshair on the other guy the fastest. Very old western-y indeed, but not something I enjoy.

Standing still to get shots off is far from how the game plays.

Option B is shooting while moving, hoping that the spread goes your way. <-- luck-based, would still dislike
Option C is getting so close that the spread doesn't matter. <-- limits in fight freedom, would still dislike

The point is, if you just think about, it's really not that hard to judge FPS games based solely on a list of mechanics.

If that's what you want to make out of it, rather than, you know, actually trying to defend why you like the game, be my guest.

If you ever seriously believed I'm as crazy about Quake as I pretended to be a year ago, you are pretty dumb. Don't know how else to say it.
