Maybe first but definitely not the last, it's been out for 14 years now. You seem to base your opinion of the game strictly on the story, the rest uhh.. what are rose tinted glasses?

Firstly, you have to compare it to the other games of its time. None of the other FPSs, with the exception of the System Shock series, had comparable features. And even then, DX improved a lot on what System Shock had to offer. It certainly had its flaws, but all games do.
When you're looking at it compared to today's games, well, if you look exclusively at graphics, then sure, it will look lousy. But part of the ability to appreciate older games is to be able to set that aside and view them as they were meant to be perceived. (And if you can't do that, then you'll be sadly missing out on some of the best games out there.)
But if you look at the gameplay, DX does an amazing job from a game design perspective. First, it offers a good variety of choices on how the player can play the game, each feeling very satisfying and effective. (Maybe not pacifist runs, but nobody's going to do that right off the bat.) The level design is fairly open, BUT it's not so open that traversing parts of it are boring and uninteresting. There is a fine line in this, and the reason why most open-ended games feel so bland a lot of the time. There's a good sense of progression and a satisfyingly deep story with just enough pretentiousness to make it cool. (Like, come on. Sunglasses at midnight, bro. Trench coats to carry your guns in. Conspiracy theories. Illuminati. The list goes on.)

I understand if it's a game you didn't particularly care for. Not everyone is going to like every game. (I know for a fact that Pill wouldn't care for it, but then his gamut of enjoyable games is so surprisingly small, I sometimes wonder how he got into SMNC in the first place. <3 <3 <3 )

But it certainly isn't a game that could be compared to excrement.

    Thank you :)

This is why I personally think that Morrowind is so much better than Skyrim. Because if you "modernised" Morrowind with graphics and voice acting, it's a better game - the decisions you make actually matter, unlike Skyrim.

Whoops, looks like I got a few people butthurt over here. :D

The fact is, a book does not necessarily have to be a work of art, neither does a game. Yet if you have a game that has almost as much depth, complexity and sophistication as Virgil's Aeneid, you certainly have witnessed a masterpiece. If you think DX can be replicated in another media well, you clearly didn't pay attention while you were playing. A first-person perspective is very rare when you are engaging with any other form of art. Also, I didn't base my liking for DX on simply the story as I just mentioned in my previous post. If you're not going to read what i say, you shouldn't be commenting in the first place, Mr. Ihavebarelyanylikes (@poiuasd ).

EDIT: I doubt you'll find another game with as much philosphical undertone than DX... 360 NOSCOPE!

Yeah well there are still a lot people here that have been browsing the forums way before PA was even an idea. We didn't have the pointless like system on the old forum software.

You can make as many off-topic threads as you can at once but you'll still take a while to reach my post count :3

(tbh I don't really care, I just get really bored really easily and this forum is second after Facebook for procrastination)

E: I just noticed you have 888 likes. You're now never allowed to get another like, unless they come in one burst of 111 likes

I know this was said half jokingly, but I've lurked the PA forums for quite some time now, and there really are people who get off to their own like count. It only reinforces my thoughts that post/like counts should be kept private, if not completely hidden.

I feel a sort of ironic satisfaction by "liking" Knickle's post above XD but yeah, given how many likes I've seen PA people getting is just sorta... meh. I'd say possible circlejerking, but nobody can out-circlejerk the alpha SMNC people
