So this is a 100% mod free game:

How the hell do I annihilate? I have left-clicked everything, I've right-clicked everything. No dice.

Sometimes systems glitch up and don't let you annihilate.
    It's weird.

Will it consistently fail for this system, or is it per-game?

    I'm pretty sure it's per-system.
iirc it's caused by either weirdness with radius or length between planets.

Don't you need to zoom in to the target's surface and actually click on the ground instead of the entire planet itself? (assuming that's what you were doing)

I think that is how it worked a few month ago when I did a single test of this.

In the new way what should happen (after doing it on a default system) is:
    1. Click Send to Annihilate.
    2. You're zoomed out to the system view. You cannot move here, though you can by pass this using camera anchors.
    3. Click the red bullseye by the planet you want to annihilate.
    4. You're now zoomed to that planet's surface.
    5. Click where on the planet you want to crash.
    6. Click Confirm Destination.
It appears that for some reason, in some systems, the red bullseye does not appear for you to click. It's possible the Zaphod system suffers from this bug and thus lost Cola_Colin a graphic's card.

Clearly I have not annihilated a planet in a long while... :(

Can you click on the target in the list at the top right?

Try mouse button 13. If you're lucky it'll work.

edit: sorry for the bad joke.

Just to clarify, I've had this happen to me as well. I was unable to click on a planet in order to select a target for annihilation.

It is most likely a bug. Has it been reported?

When you have to select a target, targetable planets get this red icon next to their name (or is a mod doing that)
I once wanted to send a planet, but i canceled to figure out wich one the enemy was on (there were many planets)
And when I wanted to try again suddenly only 2 out of the 6 planets could be selected as a target instead of all of them, the enemy planet ofource not being one of them.
A teammate could also not send his planet to the enemy.

So there seem to be some glitches with the planet smashing interface?

is the planet's radius (the weapon) smaller than the host planet? I've found that it only lets you fire small planets into larger ones and never the other way around.

I believe they're of an identical size.
