I was thinking that units lack a "soul" because we spend 90% of the time in strategic view watching at icons and not the unit themselves. In C&C, TA, Starcraft and other old RTSs, we were seeing the unit itself and got attached to some of them.

Was there a such issue in SupCom? (Excluding experimentals)

kinda hard to say .... i think supcom did suffer from that issue of many units looking similar to quickly differientiate ... best example would be the seraphim unitrooster imo ... as for lack for soul ... i am not sure but to me its a simililar thing with pa there are some cool unitdesigns such as the brick or revaner but once i got units in the hundreds i dont care about a single units appearance but its functions and destructioncapabilities and of course the huge battles being unleashed ...
i generaly dont have such a feeling to units in rts games than i have in say mechsimulations such as mechwarrior ... ... because timberwolf, mad dog ... friggin kodiak and fafnir .... also adder ... just to name a few ...
i think it is a big difference weither you just command a mammothtank or realy ride it yourself

This would be a very minor effect but it could add quite a lot of soul to the sniper bot... make its projectile animation the same laser used by the laser turrets. ^^

The accurate version is that "unit balls lack a soul" and the its much easier to get to balls or maybe I should say you rarely play with non-balls, then other games in side genres. I wouldn't say I ever saw a unit ball in something like starcraft and thought to myself "that ball of units has a soul."

That said I don't think being a ball of units automatically means you don't have a soul; it's just fairly easy to lose it. I recall back in c&c3 mass tank wars the tanks actually felt good because while you might botch them into a ball (or try to) they had personality inside that ball (like stopping to try to move back or forward, trying to clumsily position for a shot, bumping into other tanks, etc), albeit they were also 10x bigger on screen and had more detail to them then PA tanks so hard to say if the same design would work here. A lot of PA units are kind of designed too much towards being viewed from 100,000 km in the sky.
