The device reads your atomic structure, destroys you, sends that information to another teleporter, and reassembles you at the other end. This means that you died, and an exact copy has been created. I don't think teleportation would be invented before we have the technology to create connected wormholes. But if this sort of thing ever did happen, I'd stick to walking
